Iggy Azalea releases new video with RuPaul’s Drag Race stars
It has been a while since Iggy Azalea grabbed headlines with new music. The Australian rapper who had hit after hit in 2014, disappeared from the radar for a while, but returned last year with her Surviving The Summer EP. She is currently preparing the release of her sophomore studio album In My Defense which is supposed to come out sometime this Spring. First single ‘Sally Walker’ is out now and Azalea is joined by RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni in the music video.
Azalea shared in a recent interview that her new album will be mainly rap and won’t lean heavily on collaborations with pop choruses like her debut did. ‘Sally Walker’, inspired by the famous children’s rhyme dance game, is a catchy hiphop anthem with thick beats and a laidback delivery. The trap production by J. White Did It does sound similar to Cardi B’s ‘Money’ which he also produced, as well as Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Humble’ (which was produced by MikeWill Made-It). As usual, Iggy has some words for her haters and talks about her fame and bank account to shut down anyone criticizing her. There is a proper chorus with post-chorus which both have memorable hooks. I think she is beyond the point of having chances of a big radio hit with a track like this, but she at least seems to have found the sound she herself wants to move forward with.
Azalea managed to draw attention to the song with an eye catching video, featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Shea Couleé, Mayhem Miller and Vanessa ‘Vanjie’ Matteo. Couleé hits the ‘Sally Walker’ the song is about (which fans think might be inspired by Bhad Bhabie) with her car and a very unusual funeral follows… The video at least helped to get Azalea back in the centre of the attention which is a step forward in comparison to her previous releases!
