Dotan returns with first single after controversy
The past year has not been smooth sailing for Dotan. The Dutch singer-songwriter was the focus of a major controversy in the music industry just over a year ago, when it turned out that he used fake fan accounts and made up stories to boost his career. He became the nation wide subject of jokes and the success of his single ‘Home’ and the album 7 Layers suddenly seemed far away. Dotan aplogized and disappeared from the public eye for over a year. He is now ready to make a comeback with his new single ‘Numb’, reflecting on his experience over the past twelve months.
Dotan announced his comeback on social media, writing: “The past year has probably been the most difficult one for me so far, but I’ve never grown so much both personally and musically.” About ‘Numb’ he said: “It’s a song about a time where I didn’t feel anything and I didn’t know how to feel anymore, but really wanted to get back to myself”, while describing the sound as something different for him.
In comparison to his previous work, Dotan now has a slightly less acoustic sound with some vocal effects and electronic beats. The sound of the bombastic chorus resembles the style of American band Imagine Dragons. The verses are subdued in which Dotan describes how he was down and felt how he was ‘sinking’ and ‘falling in the deep unknown’. The chorus is slightly more uplifting in terms of melody in which Dotan sounds more like he is ready to fight for his comeback. There is a catchy melody going on, especially in the repetition of the title. ‘Numb’ is a more than decent comeback track that sounds on trend and ready to take over radio, although we have to wait and see how his music will be received after the scandal. I would say that ‘Numb’ does stand a good chance of granting Dotan a second chance!

Dotan maakt comeback na schandaal rondom nepaccounts
Het afgelopen jaar is ongetwijfeld anders verlopen dan Dotan het ooit voor ogen had. De Nederlandse singer-songwriter raakte ruim een jaar geleden in opspraak toen bleek dat hij gebruik maakte van neppe fanaccounts en verzonnen verhalen om zijn carrière een boost te geven. Het succes van zijn single ‘Home’ en het album 7 Layers leek erg ver weg toen hij het onderwerp van zware kritiek en vele grappen werd. De zanger bleef een jaar buiten de publiciteit, maar is nu klaar voor een terugkeer met de nieuwe single ‘Numb’.
Dotan kondigde zijn nieuwe comeback eerder deze week aan via sociale media. “Het afgelopen jaar is veruit het moeilijkste jaar uit mijn leven geweest, maar ook het meest leerzame. Ik ben nog nooit zoveel gegroeid op persoonlijk vlak en heb daar de tijd voor moeten nemen”, schrijft hij. Over ‘Numb’ zegt hij: “Het is een liedje wat ik schreef in een tijd waarin ik niets voelde en niet meer wist hoe het was om iets te voelen.. maar er wel alles aan wilde doen om daar weer te komen.” Het geluid van de plaat beschrijft hij als ‘iets anders dan we van hem gewend zijn’.
‘Numb’ klinkt wat minder akoestisch en steviger dan zijn voorgaande werk met vocale effecten en wat elektronische elementen in het bombastische refrein. In de klein gehouden coupletten zingt hij over zijn mentale toestand van het afgelopen jaar waarin hij zich voelde alsof hij ‘in het niets zonk’. In het refrein klinkt hij meer strijdbaar met een opzwepende melodie en productie. Vooral de herhaling van de titel is op het eerste gehoor al erg pakkend. ‘Numb’ is een sterke comebacksingle die eigentijds klinkt en klaar lijkt om radio weer te domineren. Nu is het nog de vraag of het publiek hem het schandaal kan vergeven. Persoonlijk denk ik dat hij met ‘Numb’ zomaar eens een tweede kans zou kunnen krijgen.
