Mariah Carey focuses on the music during Caution tour
Before 2016, Mariah Carey did not visit the Netherlands for a concert in 13 years, but ever since she keeps coming back to the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. After 2016’s Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour, Carey returned two years later with her Christmas show. Thursday night, precisely six months later, Carey ended the European leg of her Caution World Tour here. Although she sings some some of the material of this record, her best album since 2005‘s The Emancipation of Mimi, she mostly serves the hits the fans came to hear.
Through the years Carey experienced some backlash over performances with people stating that she could not sing anymore and the only time of year when her music gets the attention it deserves in the media, is when ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ breaks another streaming or radio record. During her show in the Ziggo Dome however, she still is a super star. She confirms her reputation before she even walks on the stage, as she arrives fashionably late, 30 minutes later than she was supposed to.
She opens with ‘A No No’, a sassy, yet breezy R&B anthem taken from her latest album Caution. Although the tour was named after this record, the only other song from it she performs, is the title track, while ‘Stay Long Love You’ functions as an interlude during which Miss Carey is backstage for a costume change. Throughout the night she wears four different dresses and a bathing suit like attire. She is accompanied by a talented group of male dancers and a full band with three backing vocals. They give Mariah’s hits a soulful and swinging vibe.
Carey herself does not really participate in the choreography, but walks up and down the stage, concentrating on belting out her biggest hits. Those dizzying high notes and big ad libs might not come as easy as in the earlier days of her career anymore, but she does still very much stand her ground vocally. She does hit the iconic whistle notes in ‘Emotions’ and gives vocally satisfying renditions of hits like ‘Dreamlover’, ‘Always Be My Baby’ and ‘One Sweet Day’, which she sings with band members Trey Lorenz and Daniel Moore. Big ballad ‘My All’, a challenging song to sing even for greats like Mariah Carey, is performed flawlessly and receives some of the loudest applause of the evening. Carey takes us all the way back to the beginning of her career in 1990, as she performs her first ever single ‘Vision Of Love’. She impressively works her way through the big notes and leaves her audience waiting in anticipation, while postponing the big finale. When she does hit that note, the Lambily (as she calls her fans) cheer her on.
Mariah clearly enjoys the signs her fans brought out as she keeps mentioning them. She even takes one of their t-shirts with her. The singer enjoys some chats with them in her typical playful diva attitude, consistently calling them ‘dahlings’. Towards the end of the show she even brings out her make up artists for a little touch up. Carey knows exactly what her image is and completely owns it. The fans also get to see their idol in her role as mother, as her two children come on stage briefly to greet their mother halfway through the show, which is an endearing moment to watch.
Towards the end, Carey performs the #JusticeForGlitter medley, consisting of songs taken from the soundtrack of the movie that got butchered by critics. It was a nice moment for the fans who helped make the hashtag go viral, but perhaps lasted a bit too long for the casual fan. Luckily she was quick to move on with some of her biggest hits of the noughties. The mostly quite young crowd seemed to appreciate the sensual R&B of ‘Touch My Body’ and 2005’s massive comeback hit ‘We Belong Together’ was easily one of the absolute highlights of the night. Carey perfectly worked her way through the fast paced lyrics in the verses of the R&B ballad and belted beautifully over the chorus, while the audience helped the backing vocals with the main parts.
Carey saved the big ballad ‘Hero’ for last (if she would have started in time we might have gotten ‘Without You’ too, as she finished with that one during most other tour dates), once more giving us her all vocally. The Caution World Tour is not a spectacular show with a euphoric climax and does lack tempo at times, because of the costume changes. Other than the different fabulous dresses, Carey performs a concert truly focused on music, celebrating her still impeccable vocals and impressive discography.

Nadruk ligt op de muziek bij Mariah Carey’s Caution tour
Mariah Carey was voor 2016 zo’n dertien jaar niet in Nederland te bewonderen, maar sindsdien heeft ze de smaak flink te pakken. Nadat ze met de Sweet, Sweet Fantasy tour in de Ziggo Dome stond, keerde ze in december 2018 terug met haar kerstconcert. Donderdagavond, precies een half jaar later, brengt ze ook de Caution World Tour naar de Amsterdamse concertzaal. Tijdens het laatste concert van het Europese gedeelte van de tour speelt ze wat materiaal van het vorig jaar uitgekomen album (haar beste sinds comebacksucces The Emancipation of Mimi uit 2005), maar richt zich voornamelijk op haar grootste hits.
Carey raakte in de afgelopen jaren meerdere malen in opspraak met optredens waarvan gezegd werd dat ze het vocaal allemaal niet meer aan kan. Haar muziek lijkt alleen nog het nieuws te halen als ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ weer een streaming- of airplay-record breekt. In de Ziggo Dome is ze echter nog steeds dezelfde grote wereldster. Ze maakt haar reputatie al waar voordat ze op het podium staat, door een half uur te laat te beginnen.
Ze begint de show met ‘A No No’, een zomerse R&B plaat met een bijdehante tekst van haar laatste album Caution. Hoewel de tour naar dit album is vernoemd, zingt ze er verder alleen de titeltrack van terwijl ‘Stay Long Love You’ als een interlude gebruikt wordt tijdens dat Carey zich in een nieuwe outfit hult. De zangeres draagt gedurende het optreden vier verschillende jurken en een soort badpak. Ze wordt bijgestaan door een groep getalenteerde mannelijke dansers en een volledige band met drie achtergrondzangers. Met elkaar geven ze Mariah’s hits een soulvolle en swingende sound.
Carey houdt zich zelf grotendeels afzijdig van de choreografie die om haar heen gebeurt, maar wandelt voornamelijk van links en rechts terwijl ze zich op haar vocale partijen concentreert. De extreem hoge noten en grootse uithalen gaan haar ogenschijnlijk niet meer zo eenvoudig af als gedurende de succesvolste dagen van haar carrière, maar ze staat vocaal nog steeds haar mannetje. De alom bekende ‘whistle’-noten uit ‘Emotions’ perst ze er nog steeds zuiver uit en ook hits als ‘Dreamlover’, ‘Always Be My Baby’ en ‘One Sweet Day’, gezongen met bandleden Trey Lorenz en Daniel Moore, klinken spatzuiver. Carey maakt het zich er niet gemakkelijk vanaf door de vocaal uitdagende ballade ‘My All’ in de setlist op te nemen, maar ze slaat zich er met kracht doorheen. Het levert haar een luid applaus op. Vervolgens neemt ze ons helemaal terug naar 1990, het jaar dat haar eerste single ‘Vision Of Love’ uitkwam. Ze weet het overtuigend neer te zetten en bouwt de spanning nog even op te bouwen voor de laatste noot, die ze uitstelt. Als ze ook deze haalt reageren haar fans (die ze liefkozend Lambily noemt) uitgelaten.
Mariah geniet duidelijk van de aandacht van haar fans die met spandoeken en t-shirts op de proppen zijn gekomen. Ze maakt er regelmatig opmerkingen over en gaat zelfs met één van de shirts naar huis. Ze kletst wat met hen en noemt ze steevast ‘dahlings’ op haar kenmerkende diva-achtige manier. Tegen het einde van de show roept ze de visagie nog even het podium op, omdat ze een ‘touch up’ nodig heeft. Carey weet precies hoe ze bekend staat en zet dit imago volledig naar haar hand. We vangen ook nog een glimp op van Carey als moeder, wanneer haar kinderen halverwege de show hun moeder even een kus komen geven op het podium. Een vertederend moment!
Tegen het einde van het concert zingt ze de #JusticeForGlitter-medley, bestaande uit liedjes van de soundtrack van de film die door critici volledig werd afgemaakt. Het was een leuk moment voor fans die de hashtag viraal lieten gaan, maar het duurde net wat te lang voor de bezoeker die vooral de hits wilde horen. Gelukkig ging ze snel door met haar grootste successen uit het vorige decennium. Het vooral jonge publiek kan de sensuele R&B van ‘Touch My Body’ zeker waarderen en de grootste comeback uit 2005, ‘We Belong Together’, behoorde tot één van de absolute hoogtepunten van de avond. Carey maakte indruk door de snelle coupletten foutloos te zingen en in het refrein uit te halen, terwijl de achtergrondzangers door het publiek worden bijgestaan.
Carey bewaarde de ballade ‘Hero’ tot het laatst (als ze op tijd was begonnen hadden we wellicht ook ‘Without You’ nog te horen gekregen, aangezien ze die bij de meeste andere concerten van deze tour wel zong) en geeft zich vocaal nog één keer helemaal. De Caution World Tour is niet zo zeer een spectaculaire show met een grootse climax en het tempo ligt soms wat laag door de kledingwissels, maar afgezien van de jurken, richt Carey zich vooral op het geven van een concert waarbij haar nog altijd ijzersterke stem en indrukwekkende repertoire centraal staat.
