Lana Del Rey records Donovan cover for scary movie
The Queen of Soundtracks strikes again! Lana Del Rey first proved she excels at creating film music when she wrote the dramatic ballad ‘Young and Beautiful’ for the remake of the movie The Great Gatsby. After this triumph she continued working on soundtracks, delivering two tunes for the movie Big Eyes and covering ‘Once Upon A Dream’ for Maleficent. Now she is back with another cover taken from the soundtrack of the upcoming horror movie Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. Here is Lana Del Rey’s version of Donovan track ‘Season of the Witch’.
As one would expect, Del Rey’s version of the 60s tune is slightly more creepy, with more breathy almost sensual vocals. Her cover is not as dark and as unnerving as when she did ‘Once Upon A Dream’, but she once again manages to breathe new life into a classic. From the humming in the intro to the little background voices and layered vocals in the last bridge, she completely makes the track her own. The guitar based production is not necessarily modernizing the original that much, but simply shows off a new out outlook on how to play with the melody progression in the tune. This is how one does an intriguing cover!
For those who can’t get enough new Lana this week, she also officially released the song ‘Looking for America’ which she wrote and shared on social media after the recent mass shootings in the US.
