Miley Cyrus opens up about break up on stunning new single
Last June, Miley Cyrus treated us to the She Is Coming EP with the promise of two more EPs coming soon which will form an album together. In the meantime, a lot has happened in Miley’s personal life. The singer announced her split from husband Liam Hemsworth after just nine months of marriage. Just short of a week after the news, she dropped the new track ‘Slide Away’ with any announcement or context. After listening to the track we can say the lyrics speak for themselves.
On 2017’s single ‘Malibu’, Miley opened up about her relationship with Liam, singing how he made her appreciate life at the beach with ‘Malibu’ being a metaphor for their happy place as a couple. ‘Slide Away’ could be seen as the not so hopeful sequel to these lyrics. “So won’t you slide away? Back to the ocean, I’ll go back to the city lights”, she sings on the Mike WiLL Made-It and Andrew Wyatt produced track. She looks back at when they met (when Miley was 17) and how she changed and it is time to let go. It is all heartbreaking, but Miley managed to put these feelings into some of her finest lyrics yet, which are both specific on her situation and have a universal message everyone could relate to at the same time.
The production on ‘Slide Away’ is rich, but the track feels quite subdued at the same time. There’s a guitar, strings and a light, mid tempo hip hop beat and an overall sound that brings back the late 90s with a certain breeziness. Miley delivers some of her most refined and subtle vocal work as well. ‘Slide Away’ is simply stunning and could well grow out to be one of the highlights in her already rich discography.
Update: Miley Cyrus finds herself in a swimming pool in the aftermath of a house party in the beautiful video for ‘Slide Away’.
