Ava Max uses ABBA sample on new single ‘Torn’
For Ava Max, 2019 is a year she will not forget anytime soon. After her debut single ‘Sweet But Psycho’ blew up internationally, she launched follow up ‘So Am I’ which achieved success with the same formula. After treating her fans to the new tunes ‘Freaking Me Out’ and ‘Blood, Sweat & Tears’ which are not seen as official singles, she now drops third single ‘Torn’. The track uses the famous sample in ABBA’s ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’ which also famously featured in Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’. The use of it in ‘Torn’ is way more subtle however and could just fly under the radar if you are not paying close attention. Therefore one could ask if it is a valuable addition to an already irresistible little pop tune. It’s not exactly original or ground-breaking, but in that sense it matches with her previous output. ‘Torn’ is catchy enough to probably secure another decent hit, but I do believe Ava and her team need to think about what her distinctive sound as a pop star should be. Everything she has put out so far is catchy, but lacks a proper stamp that makes it recognizable as an Ava Max track, which could her career in the long run. For now, let us continue to bop to her tunes though!
