Dami Im returns with first original material in three years
After Dami Im’s impressive result for Australia in Eurovision 2016 (she finished as runner up with the ballad ‘Sound of Silence’), fans of the contest might have hoped for the singer to soon release an album with more of her own power ballads, but this never happened. After the contest she released two cover albums and an attempt at dance pop with single ‘Fighting For Love’. Now she is finally back with another new single, titled ‘Crying Underwater’, which Dami describes as her most personal single yet.
Im wrote the track together with Michael Tan and it is produced by Andy Mak. They created a midtempo pop tune with a contemporary sound. The verses are calm and stripped back, while the chorus and Im’s vocals alike gain power with every time it comes around, making it more vivacious and memorable each time. The singer explained how the lyrics deal with how we often hide our problems, just to make it appear like we are doing well. “Mike and I were reflecting about how hard it is for so many people to actually open up about their mental struggles and how easy it is to assume someone is okay when they’re not”, she explains the meaning behind the lyrics. A return to form from Australia’s most successful Eurovision participant so far!
