Single Review: Mandy Moore – When I Wasn’t Watching

Mandy Moore When I Wasn't Watching

Mandy Moore returns with new original music after ten years
Mandy Moore the pop star is finally back! The singer who had her breakthrough in 1999 with the single ‘Candy’ and followed up with the hit ‘I Wanna Be With You’, has been silent for a long time. Her most recent album Amanda Leigh was released back in 2009. In the meantime, she had some success as an actress, playing one of the main parts in the series This Is Us. After ten years, she finally returns as a pop star with the beautiful new single ‘When I Wasn’t Watching’.

When Moore announced her comeback as a singer earlier this year, she explained that her relationship with musician Ryan Adams, who is being accused of several accounts of sexual misconduct and emotional abuse, was (part of) the reason she stopped making music. She listed his controlling behaviour as the reason she could not build new relations within the music industry, while he refused to work with her, allegedly saying she is not a real musician. Moore’s divorce was finalized in 2016 so nothing is stopping from resuming her music career now.

Comeback single ‘When I Wasn’t Watching’ was co-written by Moore, Taylor Goldsmith, Jason Boesel and Mike Viola who also produced the tune. The mix of pop and some soft rock guitars with 70s and 90s influences going on, suits her warm vocals well. ‘When I Wasn’t Watching’ is breezy guitar pop, perfectly suitable for late summer evenings. The chorus soars beautifully and sounds like old school Natalie Imbruglia and recent Haim all at the same time. The lyrics are all about realizing you have changed and finding yourself again. How fitting! Mandy Moore just made a glorious return and I sure hope everyone’s watching.
