Selena Gomez kicks off new era with ballad about self discovery
Can you believe it is already four years ago that Selena Gomez released her most recent album Revival? The pop star kept on releasing several singles throughout 2017 and some collaborations after that, but now she seems ready to properly kick off the era for a next album. She starts out with the ballad ‘Lose You To Love Me’ and it seems like this is her most important release in a good while.
Listening the song for the first time, it is not hard to hear Gomez co-wrote the tune together with Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter. In terms of sound, it fits right in with one of Julia’s recent EPs which obviously is not a bad thing. The production by Mattman and Robin and FINNEAS (the producer and brother of Billie Eilish) is slowly building from a piano ballad into this big sing along tune with a prominent choir. Admittedly, Selena Gomez will never be the vocalist of a generation and she struggles to pull this off convincingly, but at the same time, this release seems more honest than a lot of things she has done before. Gomez explained that the song is about her journey of self discovery in the past few years, while the lyrics also deal with cutting out the people that do not help this process. It is a well-written pop ballad which lyrically fits her pop persona like a glove.
