Loïc Nottet celebrates Halloween with EP and short film Candy
Belgian pop star Loïc Nottet sure loves Halloween. Two years ago, he released the creepy single and video ‘Doctor’ to coincide with the horror holiday and this year he even takes it a step further. He just launched a short film and EP titled Candy which contains a new single with same name. So let us make sense of this all!
Now if you think this is going to be an EP full of new electronic pop bangers, you might want to adjust your expectations slightly. ‘Candy’ is the proper new single which follows the style Nottet has set out for himself over the past years, but the rest of the EP mostly makes sense in combination with the short film. It is a mix of short tracks that combine musical theater with some dark electro pop and a whole lot of creepy Halloween elements. ‘Candy’ is a follow up to ‘Doctor’, both in terms of sound and lyrics. While this track sounds less like Rihanna’s ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ than its predecessor, the ‘shots shots shots’ moment still seems to be inspired by that tune. Needless to say it is a bop with a banging production and lyrics full of attitude.
Now visually, Nottet is clearly living his Halloween dream. We see him dressed up as a clown, loosely inspired by the Joker it seems. He acts out the creepy part convincingly and you can tell he is having a lot of fun with it. He does a choreography with life-sized teddy bears, shoots himself in the head with a confetti gun and visits the candy house of a witch that seems inspired by Hansel and Gretel. The credits teach us Nottet even did the costume design himself! Candy combines elements from musical theater, horror cinema, pop music videos like Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and above all his own Halloween fantasies. We stan a pop star who does it all!
