Naaz is a pop star in her own right in Bitterzoet
If you need proof that the star of Dutch pop artist Naaz is rising quickly, how about this: she played her very first solo concert ever in Bitterzoet in Amsterdam in May 2018. Now, a year and a half later, she finishes her European tour by selling out the venue three nights in a row. With two impressive pop EPs to her name and three excellent musicians by her side, Naaz treats her loyal and vocal fans to the night of their lives.
While her debut EP Bits of Naaz mostly consisted of light arrangements created in her bedroom, topped off with sweet and subdued vocal work, follow up the beautiful struggle saw her working with other producers and using her vocals in a different way. This becomes clear early on in the concert too when she pours out her heart on the stunningly sad anthem damage 🙁. That raw edge in her voice adds depth to her tunes and she pulls it off consistently all through the night.
While Naaz has just two EPs and a handful of singles to her name, her fans still managed to make this concert feel like a greatest hits show. Especially the people standing in the first few rows (but not just them) know every single word to every song, even the ones she hasn’t put out on Spotify properly. Every time Naaz asks them to sing (or scream) along louder, they give her exactly what she wants. Naaz seems to be thriving thanks to all this positive feedback and the loving atmosphere in the room, as she energetically bounces from one side of the small stage to the other.
Tracks like ‘Loving Love’ and ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ properly get the party going while the whole crowd seems to be jumping by the time ‘TAPED’ and ‘Up To Something’ come around. Break out hit ‘Words’ is performed while every audience member holds up the light on their phone. While most of her tracks are fast paced and upbeat, she also shines with a heartfelt rendition of her tune ‘heart drive’. All of a sudden, Bitterzoet quietly listens while her voice completely fills the room. During and after the track, fans comfort each other while letting some tears flow.
Another emotional highlight of the night is ‘Proud of Me’, which she dedicates to her parents who proudly watch her from the balcony, while her fans hold up signs for her. She closes the show with the raw and personal ‘Do You?’ only to come back a last time to sing an acoustic version of ‘TAPED’. Other than her ability to write equally personal and catchy pop tunes and building a loyal fan base through her honest and open communication with them, she also became a confident entertainer and let’s not forget she is a damn good vocalist with a broad range and the ability to put everything she feels into her vocal performance. May her star keep rising for years to come!
Concert Recensie: Naaz in Bitterzoet, Amsterdam
Naaz straalt tijdens intiem concert met trouwe fans
Mocht je nog bewijs nodig hebben dat het hard gaat met Nederlandse popartiest Naaz: anderhalf jaar geleden gaf ze haar eerste eigen concert in Bitterzoet in Amsterdam. Nu sluit ze er haar Europese tour af met drie uitverkochte shows hier. Met twee ijzersterke EPs op haar naam en drie uitstekende muzikanten aan haar zijde, bezorgt ze haar loyale en luide fans de avond van hun leven.
Hoewel haar eerste EP Bits of Naaz vooral bestaat uit eenvoudige arrangementen die ze in haar slaapkamer maakte en lichte, haast ingehouden vocalen, pakt ze op de opvolger the beautiful struggle uit met grote producties die ze samen met andere producers maakte. Ook haar stemgeluid kent meer diepgang met een rauwere klank, wat zich vroeg in het concert al manifesteert op het pijnlijk eerlijke liedje damage 🙁. Dit pure en eerlijke geluid weet ze de hele avond vast te houden.
Hoewel Naaz dus maar twee EP’s en enkele losse singles op haar naam heeft staan, lijkt het als je naar de fans kijkt haast wel een tour met haar grootste hits. Vooral (maar niet alleen) de mensen die vooraan in de zaal staan kunnen elk lied woord voor woord meezingen, zelfs de tracks die ze nog niet op Spotify heeft uitgebracht. Elke keer als hun idool hen vraagt harder mee te zingen of te schreeuwen, dan doen ze dat zonder aarzelen. Naaz geniet zichtbaar van het enthousiaste ontvangst en huppelt energiek op en neer over het kleine podium.
De swingende liedjes ‘Loving Love’ en ‘it’s not me it’s you’ weten het feestje aan te moedigen en tegen de tijd dat ‘TAPED’ en ‘Up To Something’ worden gespeeld, staat de hele zaal te springen. ‘Words’, de single die haar doorbraak betekende, zingt ze terwijl iedereen het licht van zijn of haar telefoon omhoog houdt. Een aandoenlijk tafereel! Hoewel Naaz de dansbare liedjes in hoog tempo op ons afvuurt, weet ze Bitterzoet volledig in te pakken met een verstilde uitvoering van ‘Heart Drive’. De zaal luistert muisstil hoe de woorden van het lied de zaal vullen terwijl hier en daar fans elkaar snikkend in de armen vallen.
Ook het liedje ‘Proud of Me’ vormt een emotioneel hoogtepunt van de avond. Naaz draagt het lied op aan haar ouders, die vanaf het balkon toekijken hoe haar fans ineens allemaal berichten op papiertjes voor hun dochter omhoog houden. De show wordt afgesloten met het rauwe en persoonlijke ‘Do You’ waarna ze nog eenmaal terugkomt voor een akoestische versie van ‘TAPED’. Naaz heeft een trouwe groep fans opgebouwd door open communicatie met hen en haar liedjes die net zo eerlijk als pakkend zijn. Ze heeft zich daarnaast ontwikkeld tot een echte entertainer met een groot stembereik en de bijzondere gave om elk woord een emotionele lading te geven. Laat haar maar lekker doorgroeien de komende jaren, want ze heeft oneindige potentie!
