Thankful Freya Ridings impresses with debut album live in Melkweg
It is just over a year ago that Freya Ridings finally stormed the British charts with her biggest hit to date ‘Lost Without You’. A Bit of Pop Music named her the most promising artist for 2019 and she sure did not disappoint with her self-titled debut album that came out over the summer. Ridings is currently on tour in Western Europe and visited de Melkweg in Amsterdam for her biggest show in The Netherlands yet.
Ridings and her four band members open the show with a beautiful intro and her latest single ‘Love Is Fire’, a radiofriendly, upbeat singer-songwriter pop tune. From the very first moment on, the 25-year-old British performer shows herself to be very grateful to be able to play this show. She thanks the audience on numerous occasions for spending their Friday night with her and for the fact that her personal songs about heartbreak resonated with so many people it gave her the chance to tour the world.
Ridings stays behind her piano for most of the show (she only sings ‘Unconditional’ standing up while playing the guitar) and her powerhouse vocals easily fill up the room. Piano ballad ‘You Mean The World To Me’ has the audience listening in awe early on in the show, while the live instrumentation of the more bombastic tunes like ‘Ultraviolet’, ‘Poison’ and ‘Waking Up’ sound even more powerful. Her voice throughout the whole show is to die for. She sounds just rich when she hits the higher notes as when she goes for deep tones, which beautifully showed on the live rendition of album closer ‘Wishbone’.
Her upbeat hit ‘Castles’ had the whole crowd singing along and of course she saved the ballad that changed her life, ‘Lost Without You’, for the encore. She asks everyone to sing along for that one too, but most people seem to prefer to quietly listen to her singing the heartbreakingly beautiful tune. She ends the show with the gospel inspired, Florence + the Machine-esque ‘Holy Water’ on which her band serves an epic finale. About an hour after she started, Freya Ridings leaves the satge again, but she gave us everything we came for!

Dankbare Freya Ridings maakt indruk met haar debuutplaat in Melkweg
Het is net iets meer dan een jaar geleden dat de Britse singer-songwriter Freya Ridings in haar thuisland een grote hit scoorde met de ballad ‘Lost Without You’. De zangeres werd door A Bit of Pop Music tot meest veelbelovende artiest van het jaar 2019 gebombardeerd en ze stelde zeker niet teleur met haar naar zichzelf vernoemde debuutalbum, dat afgelopen zomer verscheen. De zangeres is momenteel op tour door West-Europa om de plaat aan de man te brengen en stopte ook in de Melkweg in Amsterdam, voor haar grootste show op Nederlandse bodem tot nu toe.
Ridings en haar vier bandleden beginnen de show met een atmosferisch intro dat al snel overgaat in het radiovriendelijke poplied ‘Love Is Fire’. Vanaf het eerste moment toont de 25-jarige singer-songwriter zich dankbaar om in Amsterdam te zijn en voor haar grootste Nederlandse publiek tot nu toe te staan. Ze bedankt het publiek meerdere malen voor het doorbrengen van hun vrijdagavond met haar en stelt nog steeds verbaasd te zijn dat de liedjes die ze schreef over haar gebroken hart zo’n groot publiek hebben geraakt.
Ridings blijft voor het grootste deel van de show achter haar piano zitten (ze zingt enkel ‘Unconditional’ terwijl ze staat en gitaar speelt), maar haar krachtige stem vult de zaal met hetzelfde gemak. Het publiek luistert gespannen naar haar vertolking van de pianoballad ‘You Mean The World To Me’, die al vroeg in het concert voorbij komt. De live instrumentatie van de meer bombastische platen als ‘Poison’, ‘Waking Up’ en ‘Ultraviolet’ klinkt nog krachtiger dan op plaat. Hetzelfde geldt voor haar jaloersmakend volle stemgeluid. Ze haalt de hoge noten met net zoveel volume als de lage, diepe tonen, wat prachtig naar voren komt op ‘Wishbone’, het lied waarmee ze haar debuutplaat afsluit.
De swingende hit ‘Castles’ vormde het moment voor het publiek om uit volle borst mee te zingen. Haar doorbraak ‘Lost Without You’ werd uiteraard bewaard tot het toegift en hoewel Ridings vraagt of mensen mee willen zingen, luistert het gros toch liever met ingehouden adem naar haar vertolking. De show wordt afgesloten met ‘Holy Water’, een bombastische plaat met gospelinvloeden die bij vlagen doet denken aan Florence + the Machine. De band krijgt hier de ruimte om een epische finale aan het concert te geven. Amper een uur nadat ze begon loopt Freya Ridings weer van het podium af, maar ze heeft ons alles gegeven waar we voor kwamen!
