Host country the Netherlands sends soulful ballad ‘Grow’ by Jeangu Macrooy
After eight years of not even qualifying for the final, The Netherlands finally got back on the right Eurovision track with Anouk’s 9th place in 2013. Ever since, they only missed the final once, finished 2nd in 2014 (with the Common Linnets) and last year, Duncan Laurence brought the country its fifth Eurovision victory (first in 44 years) with the song ‘Arcade’. Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS internally selected singer Jeangu Macrooy for the tough but honorable job to follow up this win and represent The Netherlands as host country. He will do so with the soulful ballad ‘Grow’.
‘Grow’ was supposed to be premiered in talk show De Wereld Draait Door, but was accidentally already released on Apple Music. AVROTROS did not officially confirm that this is the Eurovision entry yet, but the teaser they dropped a couple of days ago is from the same music video shoot as the video for ‘Grow’ that was on the streaming service for a while.
Jeangu Macrooy was born in Suriname and moved to the Netherlands in 2014 where he kicked off his music career. He released two albums so far and performed all over the country in festivals and television shows. The ballad ‘Grow’ is in line with his style of modern soul with influences from pop and gospel. It is a beautiful, personal and fragile song about being insecure when growing up and trying to find your place in life and in this world through the ups and downs we experience. Those lyrics are universally relatable, but also personal to Macrooy’s life story. His voice has a rare warm and soothing quality that jumps out on a song like ‘Grow’.
The ballad starts out almost a cappella, with just Macrooy’s voice telling the story and some distant organ sounds in the background. From a minute on, the track starts slowly building with some humming background vocals, but it isn’t until around the two minute mark, that the track actually breaks open and Macrooy starts to belt out the words “The more I learn, the less I know, through every high and every low I grow”, while the backing vocals repeat the word ‘grow’. This beautiful finale however, is over before you know it.
Although the song is a beautiful composition and I am convinced Macrooy will do it justice live on the Eurovision stage, the slow build up might not be the most suitable for a competition like Eurovision. It is risky, because the television viewer might have already lost attention before the proper melody and climax come around. I definitely see this do a lot better with juries than televoters and let’s hope they save the Netherlands from the same fate as most hosting countries lately: finishing somewhere at the bottom of the scoreboard. Because ‘Grow’ definitely deserves more than that!
Update: Jeangu Macrooy gave an atmospheric, pitch perfect and moving first performance of his song ‘Grow’ in tv show De Wereld Draait Door. The track truly comes to life on stage, especially in the last minute. With an intimate staging with prominent backing vocals on stage, this song could gain a lot of power.

Jeangu Macrooy vertegenwoordigt Nederland voor eigen publiek met ‘Grow’
Na acht jaar niet de finale te hebben gehaald, wist Anouk namens Nederland het tij te keren op het Eurovisie Songfestival met een negende plek. Sindsdien werd de finale nog maar een keer gemist, haalden The Common Linnets in 2014 een tweede plaats en wist Duncan Laurence het hele festival vorig jaar te winnen met ‘Arcade’. De AVROTROS selecteerde zanger Jeangu Macrooy vervolgens voor de zware maar eervolle taak om ons land te vertegenwoordigen voor eigen publiek in Rotterdam in mei. Hij gaat dit doen met de soulvolle ballade ‘Grow’.
Het Songfestival-lied zou eigenlijk pas woensdagavond in première gaan tijdens De Wereld Draait Door, maar werd per abuis al op streamingplatform Apple Music uitgebracht. De AVROTROS heeft nog niet officieel bevestigd dat dit hét nummer is, maar de videoclip matcht met de teasers die het officiële Songfestival-account eerder plaatste. Inmiddels heeft Apple Music de upload verwijderd.
De in Suriname geboren Jeangu Macrooy verhuisde in 2014 naar Nederland waar hij al snel een muziekcarrière van de grond kreeg. Hij bracht al twee albums uit, geeft optredens door het hele land en was op televisie al te zien in The Passion en schoof regelmatig aan bij De Wereld Draait Door. De ballade ‘Grow’ sluit mooi aan bij zijn eerdere werk, dat voornamelijk bestaat uit moderne soul met invloeden van pop en gospel. Het is een prachtig, persoonlijk en breekbaar lied over de onzekerheden die komen kijken bij het opgroeien en het vinden van je plaats in het leven en de wereld terwijl we hoogtepunten ervaren en dieptepunten verwerken. De songtekst is voor iedereen herkenbaar en tegelijkertijd persoonlijk geschreven uit Macrooy’s eigen levenservaring. Zijn stem heeft een unieke warme en rustgevende kwaliteit die er echt uitspringt op ‘Grow’.
Macrooy zingt voor de eerste minuut haast a capella, met enkel wat orgelgeluiden in de verte. Pas daarna wordt hij vergezeld door een neuriënd achtergrondkoor en pas bij ongeveer twee minuten barst het lied echt open. Dan zingt hij voluit de woorden “The more I learn, the less I know, through high and every low I grow”, terwijl de achtergrondzang het woord ‘grow’ blijft herhalen over een meeslepende melodielijn. Deze ontknoping eindigt echter alweer snel en plotseling.
‘Grow’ is absoluut een mooie compositie en ik ben ervan overtuigd dat Macrooy het live op het Songfestival-podium indrukwekkend zal brengen, maar de vraag blijft of de trage opbouw van het lied het zal overleven in een competitie als het Eurovisie Songfestival. Er zijn 25 andere liedjes om uit te kiezen in de finale en de aandacht van de televoters is daarom niet oneindig. ‘Grow’ heeft lang nodig om tot een climax te komen en dat is niet ideaal voor het Songfestival. Het lijkt me meer een inzending die het goed gaat doen bij de jury dan bij de mensen thuis en hopelijk is dit genoeg om Nederland niet hetzelfde lot te geven als de organiserende landen de afgelopen jaren: die eindigden bijna altijd ergens onderaan het scoreboard. Als je het mij vraagt, verdient Jeangu Macrooy meer dan dat met zijn ‘Grow’.
Update: Jeangu Macrooy heeft een sfeervolle, perfect gezongen en emotioneel eerste live optreden van ‘Grow’ neergezet in De Wereld Draait Door. De zanger weet het lied live nog meer tot leven te brengen, zeker in de laatste minuut. Met een intieme staging met een rol voor de achtergrondzangeressen, wint dit lied aan kracht.
