Sam Smith and Demi Lovato team up on ‘I’m Ready’
Sam Smith had announced earlier this year that their third album would be called To Die For and was supposed to be released on the 1st of May. Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, they decided to postpone the release, change the title and work on some more material. At this stage it is not clear if singles like ‘To Die For’, ‘How Do You Sleep?‘ and ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ will still make the record. Smith promised that new music was coming soon either way and they kept that promise. Their new single is titled ‘I’m Ready’ and it is a duet with American pop star Demi Lovato, who already graced us with the singles ‘Anyone’ and ‘I Love Me’ this year.

The track, co-written by Smith, Lovato, ILYA, Savan Kotecha and Peter Svensson and produced by ILYA, almost sounds like it was created by merging two different songs. ‘I’m Ready’ starts out promising with a deep beat and an exciting verse. “It’s a cold night in my bed in the heat of the summer, I’ve been waitin’ patiently for a beautiful lover”, Smith sings in a deeper and more sensual tone than we are used to from them. The verse builds up excitement for the chorus, which is unfortunately a bit of a letdown. It is somehow catchy, yet quite repetitive, but the biggest issue here is that it does not fit the the rest of the song, in terms of vibe, production or melody. Lovato sounds nice enough on the tune, but she can’t distract from the fact that those verses and production deserved a better chorus. Not even a choir joining in for the last one could change that.
