Foxes returns to form with emotional banger ‘Friends In The Corner’
British pop star Foxes finally returned earlier this year with the track ‘Love Not Loving You’. It was her first new work since her sophomore record All I Need came out in 2016. Not long after she dropped her second single of 2020 titled ‘Woman’, a moving piano ballad. Now it is time for single number three, ‘Friends In The Corner’, which is a heartbreaking banger!
When Foxes broke through back in 2013, her impeccable ear for a big pop melody was immediately clear. She became known for her rousing anthemic pop choruses and that is exactly what she serves on ‘Friends In The Corner’. Foxes co-wrote the track with James Flannigan about friendship and love and the loss of these things as well as growing older and the ‘impermanence’ of life. There is absolutely no denying the chorus on this one. The first time it comes around Foxes sings it almost a capella until the beat kicks in and she sweeps us off our feet. Foxes has proved before that she fully masters the art of the sad banger and with ‘Friends In The Corner’ she shows she has perfected it, both in terms of lyrics and melodies. Foxes did that.
“When Foxes broke through back in 2013, her impeccable ear for a big pop melody was immediately clear.”
Indeed.
“She became known for her rousing anthemic pop choruses and that is exactly what she serves on ‘Friends In The Corner.’”
No, that is NOT what she serves here. Instead, she serves a middling adult-contemporary number that’s actually kinda boring. That’s it.
Oh ok, my bad.
