Single Review: Justin Bieber – Lonely

Justin Bieber opens up on heartbreaking new single ‘Lonely’
After fans of Justin Bieber had to wait over four years for a new album, the Canadian pop star is giving them everything they wanted in 2020. After releasing his album Changes in February, he came back soon after with the duet ‘Stuck With U’ with Ariana Grande and the single ‘Holy’ with Chance the Rapper. He now recorded another new single ‘Lonely’, with producer Benny Blanco. The track was co-written by Bieber, Blanco and Finneas, the brother of Billie Eilish.

‘Lonely’ surely must be one of the most personal things Bieber has ever recorded. The two and half minute long piano ballad tells his story in a way that he hasn’t before. The lyrics express the loneliness Bieber has experienced since becoming one of the most talked about pop stars on the planet. “What if you had it all, but nobody to call? Maybe then you’d know me. ‘Cause I’ve had everything, but no one’s listening and that’s just fucking lonely”, he sings, before repeating the word ‘lonely’ in a vulnerable and heartbreaking manner.

He further describes how ‘living in a glass house’ is the price he paid for the money and fame and how everybody watched as he wasn’t doing well, but nobody did anything to help him. Bieber’s vocal work is emotive and vulnerable and melodies on ‘Lonely’ are equally captivating. Releasing this song is a brave move that shows his versatility as an artist.
