Established artists and fresh talents shine in Club Ziggo
Club Ziggo, a smaller venue next to the Ziggo Dome, hosts showcases by talented, mostly Dutch artists to give them the opportunity to play their new music for a crowd that can enter for free. I visited the club for the first time in October 2013 when they organised performances by Giovanca, Kris Berry & Perquisite and Dez Mona. As I am a fan of this concept where established artists and fresh talent gets room to showcase their new albums, I decided to go and listen again on Tuesday night, when Ziggo invited Wouter Hamel, Stefany June and Rita Zipora. Club Ziggo once again managed to present a show with once again very talented musicians and a great diversity in style.
It was Rita Zipora’s job to open the evening with her electronic, Dutch pop music, that she herself refers to as soundscape pop. Her music is an interesting mix of pop and electro with a quite dreamy vibe. What makes her songs stand out even more, is the fact that she sings in Dutch. I think it is safe to say that we are not used to hearing this style of music in the Dutch language and it may take a few songs to get used to it, but once it all sinks in, you realize it actually works quite well. She starts her set with the track ‘Opwegliedje’, an exciting production with a lot of tension in the way it is constructed. The fact that Rita is nervous is immediately visible but it never affects her crystal clear vocals. Her Dutch lyrics come across best in songs like ‘Als Ik Kijk’ en ‘Ook In De Nacht’, where the dark and sad stories get a poetic quality. Because her songs are not very accessible on first listen, it is not an easy job for her to immediately blow away the audience, but she plays a nice set of songs that represent an interesting niche in Dutch music.
After Rita Zipora’s subdued and restrained collection of songs, Stefany June brings a completely different, energetic vibe to the stage. This singer has been releasing music for some years, but her audience grew after her participation in ‘De Beste Singer-Songwriter’, a talent competition for singers and composers. Her music is quite up tempo and could be described as mostly pop, with a twist of electro and rock. The combination of the loud productions and her high, girly voice works surprisingly well and also reminds a bit of the Danish band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. The tracks she performs, all show that Stefany is indeed a very good songwriter. On ‘Dipsy Diver’ she sounds like an edgy and quirky version of Kylie Minogue, ‘To The Limit’ is a powerful tune with an irresistibly catchy chorus and ‘Is It The Whiskey?’ the first single of the album and the last track of her gig, just sounds like it should be a hit. Also, songs on the album like ‘Burning Like A Firefly’ and ‘Made Of Steel’ show she has a lot of potential. She already sounds and looks like a star when she is on stage. This girl deserves a bigger audience!
Last but not least, Wouter Hamel takes the stage and the fact that he is most established and well-known artist of the night, becomes clear when observing the audience as well. There are quite a few ladies in the crowd that sing every word to all the tracks of his new record Pompadour, released earlier this year. It is a good thing that Hamel did not lose his fans as he tried a new style of music on his new album. Where his first two records were more focussed on jazzy pop and the third album Lohengrin was the most poppy but quite ballad heavy, he now experiments with electronic sounds. The first single ‘The Lights’ show this new direction, with vocal effects and a catchy bass line. The title track is a beautiful and a fragile track with a lot of emotion that comes across even beter in a live setting. An album track like ‘Bigger’ sounds like it could be a radio hit with its infectious melody and chorus. Wouter Hamel shows himself to be an experienced and professional performer with flawless vocals. Although he seems to have some technical issues with his in-ears, he handles this very well and does not let it stop him from giving a great show. When he closes his gig with some well-known tracks from his first two albums, the crowd swings along with him.
The crowd in Club Ziggo is treated to three very different, but all interesting artists. It shows there still is a lot of talent in The Netherlands that could use and actually deserves more attention and recognition. Club Ziggo should continue these evenings as it is a great way to be introduced to some exciting new music.

Concert Recensie: Wouter Hamel, Stefany June, Rita Zipora in Club Ziggo
Gevestigde artiesten en nieuw fris talent stralen in Club Ziggo
Club Ziggo, een wat kleinere zaal naast de Ziggo Dome, organiseert showcases voor artiesten, vooral van Nederlandse bodem, die graag liedjes van hun nieuwe albums ten gehore willen brengen aan een nieuw publiek, dat gratis naar binnen mag. Ik was erbij toen Giovanca, Kris Berry & Perquisite en Dez Mona in oktober 2013 dit podium betraden en aangezien het een tof initiatief is, besloot ik gisterenavond ook te gaan kijken naar Wouter Hamel, Stefany June en Rita Zipora. Club Ziggo wist wederom een boeiende en diverse verzameling getalenteerde artiesten bij elkaar te krijgen.
De taak om de avond te openen was aan Rita Zipora en haar elektronische popmuziek die ze zelf omschrijft als soundscape pop. Haar stijl is een interessante mix van pop en electro die een behoorlijk dromerige sfeer over zich heeft. Haar muziek is des te meer opvallend, omdat ze in het Nederlands zingt. Je kunt wel zeggen het een behoorlijk verrassende combinatie is, gezien we niet gewend zijn deze muziekstijlen in het Nederlands te horen. Het is dan ook even wennen als Zipora begint, maar na een paar liedjes kom je erachter dat het eigenlijk best een lekkere combinatie is. Ze opent haar show met de spannende, mooi opgebouwde productie ‘Opwegliedje’. Hoewel Rita zichtbaar zenuwachtig is, doet dit helemaal niets af aan haar kraakheldere stemgeluid. De Nederlandstalige songteksten komen het beste uit de verf op liedjes als ‘Als Ik Kijk’ en ‘Ook In De Nacht’, waar de veelal verdrietige en ietwat duistere verhalen een poëtisch karakter krijgen. De liedjes van haar debuutalbum zijn niet bepaald toegankelijk op het eerste gehoor dus het is geen eenvoudige taak voor Zipora om het publiek direct voor zich te winnen, maar ze speelt een mooie set die een interessant niche binnen de Nederlandse muziek vertegenwoordigt.
Na het ingetogen en bescheiden optreden van Rita Zipora, brengt Stefany June direct een compleet andere, energieke vibe op het podium. Deze zangeres timmert al enkele jaren aan de weg, maar kreeg onlangs wat meer bekendheid toen ze meedeed aan het programma ‘De Beste Singer-Songwriter’. Haar muziek richt zich vooral op up-tempo composities en is een brede mix van rock en electro met een grote nadruk op pop. De combinatie van de stevige producties van de songs en haar hoge, ietwat schelle, meisjesachtige stemgeluid werkt direct ontzettend goed en doet ook wat denken aan de muziek van de Deense band The Asteroids Galaxy Tour. De liedjes die ze ten gehore brengt laten allen zien dat ze inderdaad een zeer sterke songwriter is. Op het opvallende ‘Dipsy Dive’ klinkt ze als een eigenzinnige versie van Kylie Minogue, ‘To The Limit’ is een krachtige plaat met een dijk van een refrein en de eerste single van het album waarmee ze haar set afsluit, ‘Is It The Whiskey?’ klinkt als een regelrechte hit. Ook albumliedjes ‘Made Of Steel’ en ‘Burning Like A Firefly’ laten haar potentieel goed zien. Ze heeft al de looks, uitstraling en het onderscheidende geluid van een ster. Deze dame verdient een groter publiek!
Daarna is het de beurt aan de meest gevestigde en bekende artiest van de avond, Wouter Hamel. Dit valt direct op wanneer je naar het publiek kijkt, want tijdens zijn optreden zijn er een aantal doorgewinterde fans die alle liedjes, ook van de nieuwe plaat Pompadour die eerder dit jaar verscheen, woord voor woord kunnen meezingen. Het is goed om te zien dat Hamel zijn fans niet is verloren ondanks een aantal behoorlijke veranderingen in zijn muziek. Waar de eerste twee platen werden gekenmerkt door jazzy invloeden, leunde het derde album meer naar popmuziek vol ballads en op dit vierde album experimenteert hij met elektronische geluiden. Dit is direct te horen op de eerste single ‘The Lights’, waar hij speelt met effecten op zijn stem en een zeer pakkende basslijn. De titeltrack is een mooie en breekbare ballade die live nog beter uit de verf komt. Een albumtrack als ‘Bigger’ is een potentiële radiohit met een zeer aanstekelijk refrein dat je na een luisterbeurt niet meer kwijtraakt. Wouter Hamel laat zien dat hij een ervaren en professioneel podiumbeest is. Hoewel zijn showcase hier en daar wat verstoord wordt door technische problemen, zijn oortjes laten het regelmatig afweten, laat hij zich niet van de wijs brengen en blijft loepzuiver zingen. Als hij zijn show afsluit met wat bekende liedjes van de eerste twee albums, gaan de fans nog even compleet uit hun dak en de rest van het publiek swingt ook lekker mee.
Het publiek in Club Ziggo wordt wederom getrakteerd op een gevarieerd programma vol talentvolle artiesten. Deze avonden laten zien dat er nog steeds veel talent van Nederlandse bodem is, dat eigenlijk nog meer aandacht en erkenning verdient. Het is dan ook te hopen dat Club Ziggo deze traditie van mooie showcases zal blijven doorzetten.
