Erik Hassle recorded new single with producer Stargate
Swedish singer-songwriter and awesome pop star Erik Hassle has been working in the music industry for years and produced brilliant singles like ‘Hurtful’, ‘Are You Leaving’, ‘Stay’ and ‘Talk About It’. Earlier this year he returned to form with the release of the funky ‘No Words’. Oh, and in the meantime he also co-wrote Shakira and Rihanna’s star duet ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’. Today he premiered another one of those delicious songs of himself, called ‘Natural Born Lovers’.

Single Review: Shakira – Can’t Remember To Forget You (feat. Rihanna)
Shakira and Rihanna team up for a proper pop banger
I think it is safe to say that the first highly anticipated and huge pop release of the year was dropped today. Shakira released her first new single since 2010 and asked Rihanna for some help. They recorded the track ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ together, which serves as the lead single for the upcoming new studio album by Shakira, that will come out in March. But is the song as good as you would expect from two pop super stars?
Let me start by saying that ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ (which is co-written by Swedish pop singer Erik Hassle) could be described as a typical Shakira track. It is undoubtedly recognizable as such and of course her characteristic vocal style adds to this. Stylistically, when compared to her previous material, it comes closest to ‘Animal City’, an album track from Oral Fixation Part 2. It mixes pop with some influences from ska, which reminds a bit of the sound that made No Doubt famous. The verses are nice, although Shakira’s diction is a bit poor at some points which makes it hard to understand what she is actually singing. The chorus is powerful and the ‘woah’ parts are undeniably catchy. During the chorus the song sounds slightly more rock influenced which works quite well.
I think it was a great decision to let Rihanna feature on this song. The song would not have been ruined if she was not on it, but she definitely adds something to it as her voice really fits the style and melts really well with Shakira for that matter. To be quite honest, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ does not come close to either of the two singers’ best material, but it is an unpretentious, catchy and fun pop track that could easily become a big hit over the next few weeks. Having said that, I hope Shakira’s album, that will be released at the 25th of March, will feature some stronger and more interesting songs as well.

Single Recensie: Shakira – Can’t Remember To Forget You (feat. Rihanna)
Shakira en Rihanna brengen 2014’s eerste pop hit
Ik denk dat ik niet overdrijf als ik zeg dat vandaag de eerste grote pop release hoge verwachtingen van waren, plaatsvond. Shakira bracht haar eerste single sinds 2010 uit en vroeg Rihanna hierbij om hulp. Ze namen het lied ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ op, wat nu als lead single voor Shakira’s album, dat in maart verschijnt, wordt gebruikt. Maar is de song eigenlijk wel zo goed als je zou verwachten van twee pop supersterren?
Laat ik beginnen met te zeggen dat ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ als een typische Shakira track klinkt. Haar stijl is ontegenzeggelijk direct herkenbaar en natuurlijk speelt haar karakteristieke stemgeluid hier ook een rol in. Wanneer je de stijl van het lied vergelijkt met haar eerdere materiaal, valt deze single het beste te vergelijken met ‘Animal City’, een albumtrack van Oral Fixation Part 2. Het mixt pop met wat invloeden uit ska, wat weer enigszins doet denken aan de stijl waarmee No Doubt populair werd. De coupletten klinken zeer aardig, hoewel Shakira’s gezang soms wat onverstaanbaar overkomt. Het refrein is krachtig en de ‘woah’ kreten zijn absoluut pakkend. Tijdens het refrein krijgt het lied een wat meer rockende aankleding, wat goed werkt om het wat kracht bij te zetten.
Het was zeker een goed idee om Rihanna een feature te geven op deze single. Het lied zou niet meteen een stuk minder goed zijn zonder haar, maar ze voegt toch zeker wel wat toe doordat haar stem goed bij het lied past en ook nog eens goed mengt met het geluid van Shakira. Om heel eerlijk te zijn komt ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ niet in de buurt van het beste materiaal van beide zangeressen, maar het is een onpretentieus, lekker in het gehoor liggend popliedje dat ongetwijfeld een grote hit zal blijken in de komende weken. Dat gezegd hebbende, hoop ik wel dat Shakira’s album, dat op 25 maart zal verschijnen, ook wat sterkere en interessantere liedjes zal bevatten.

Swedish singer-songwriter is back with a new single
I have blogged about a few very talented and promising Swedish female artists in the past couple of days. Now I want to introduce you to a very interesting male singer and songwriter from Sweden, Erik Hassle. Hassle debuted in the music scene in 2008 and has released a couple of albums, EP’s and singles ever since. His most recent work was released in the summer of 2012, so it was about time for him to come back. This week, he premiered his flawless new single ‘Talk About It’.
Five years ago, Erik Hassle released his impressive debut single ‘Hurtful’, which became a big hit in Sweden as well as Denmark. The song immediately showed his strengths: personal and touching song writing and an emotional delivery with his powerful and sometimes fragile vocals. The follow up single ‘Don’t Bring Flowers’ did well in both countries as well and he released his debut album. Because of international attention for him, he repackaged the album to release it in the UK and other European countries.
In 2011, Hassle came back with the Mariefred Sessions EP, but before that he released another set of songs and recorded a duet together with British pop star Ellie Goulding. They covered Robyn’s ‘Be Mine’ in an acoustic setting. ‘Are You Leaving’ was released as the first single of the EP and it is one of his best songs to date. The chorus is huge and the lyrics are once again moving. After the release of the EP, Hassle worked on his second official studio album We Dance for a year. The album was introduced by the release of the single ‘Stay’. This haunting ballad shows Hassle’s impressive and distinctive sound of voice. The emotion in his vocals and song writing is once again outstanding.
Most of the We Dance album is slightly more up tempo and a bit less dark than his previous material. ‘Heartbeats In The Sand’, ‘Feather Rain’, ‘Back Under Water’ and title track ‘We Dance’ all sound somewhat lighter and have a band sound as opposed to the slightly more electronic pop he has done before. On the new single ‘Talk About It’, Hassle takes another direction. The band sound has been exchanged for an electronic production that is based on heavy beats. In the strong chorus, we hear Hassle is still able to write big pop hooks with lovely vocals and meaningful lyrics. The first lines of the chorus, “I don’t want to talk about it, no, then nothing would be beautiful between us”, immediately make a big impression and Hassle sounds more powerful than ever.
Erik Hassle once again shows his impressive vocal and writing talent. The new, more electronic direction in sound, fits his voice just as well as what he did before and I for one cannot wait to hear more of it.

Zweedse singer-songwriter is terug met een nieuwe single
De afgelopen dagen heb ik meerdere malen geschreven over getalenteerde en veelbelovende Zweedse zangeressen. Nu is het tijd om eens een mannelijke Zweedse singer-songwriter te introduceren. Zijn naam is Erik Hassle en hij debuteerde in de muziekindustrie in 2008. Sindsdien bracht hij een handvol albums, EP’s en singles uit. Zijn meest recente werk dateert uit de zomer van 2012 en dus was het hoog tijd voor een nieuwe release. Deze week liet hij zijn prachtige nieuwe single ‘Talk About It’ in première gaan.
Het is alweer vijf jaar geleden dat Hassle een grote hit scoorde in Zweden en Denemarken met zijn sterke debuutsingle ‘Hurtful’. Deze track liet meteen zien waar de kracht van deze artiest ligt: hij schrijft emotionele en treffende pop songs en zingt ze met een krachtige, maar soms ook breekbare stem. De volgende single ‘Don’t Bring Flowers’ deed het ook goed in beide landen en daarna volgde er een debuutalbum. Deze werd wat bijgeschaafd voor een release in onder anderen het Verenigd Koninkrijk nadat er ook internationaal aandacht voor de zanger ontstond.
In 2011 keerde Hassle terug met de Mariefred Sessions EP, maar daarvoor volgde nog een andere set met songs en nam hij een duet op met de Britse popster Ellie Goulding. De twee coverden ‘Be Mine’ van Robyn in een akoestische setting. ‘Are You Leaving’ werd als de eerste single van deze EP uitgebracht en het is zeker één van zijn beste tracks tot nu toe. Het refrein is groots en de songtekst is wederom treffend. Na de release van deze EP nam Hassle een jaar de tijd om te werken aan zijn tweede officiële studioalbum We Dance. De plaat werd geïntroduceerd door de single ‘Stay’. Deze meeslepende ballad laat duidelijk het indrukwekkende en onderscheidende stem geluid van de zanger horen. De emotie in zijn vocalen en de tekst zijn wederom zeer sterk.
Het grootste deel van het We Dance album is wat meer uptempo en wat minder zwaar dan zijn voorgaande materiaal. ‘Heartbeats In The Sand’, ‘Feather Rain’, ‘Back Under Water’ en titel track ‘We Dance’ klinken allemaal wat lichter en beschikken meer over een bandsound, dan de ietwat meer elektronische pop die hij daarvoor uitbracht. Op de nieuwe single ‘Talk About It’ slaat Hassle echter weer een nieuw pad in. De bandsound maakt plaats voor een elektronische productie met zware beats. In het sterke refrein laat hij horen nog steeds in staat te zijn tot het schrijven van mooie pop melodieën met zijn fijne stemgeluid en betekenisvolle teksten. De eerste zinnen van het refrein, “I don’t want to talk about it, no, then nothing would be beautiful between us”, laten meteen een indruk achter en Hassle klinkt krachtiger dan ooit tevoren.
Erik Hassle laat wederom zijn indrukwekkende vocalen en songwriters talent zien. De nieuwe, meer elektronische richting qua sound, past net zo goed bij zijn stem als de stijlen die hij hiervoor deed en ik kan alvast niet wachten om er meer van te horen.
