Lana Del Rey premieres haunting soundtrack for Maleficent
Last year Lana Del Rey showed her fine skills for recording soundtracks by releasing her single ‘Young & Beautiful’ as the official song for the movie The Great Gatsby. It still baffles me that this gorgeous track was not nominated for a Golden Globe or Oscar for best soundtrack, but Lana Del Rey proves again that her musical style is perfectly suitable to function as film music, as she recorded a new version of Disney classic ‘Once Upon A Dream’ for the movie Maleficent. Del Rey turned the charming love song into something completely different and of course this works pretty well.
The new movie Maleficent is both a prequel to and a re-imagination of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty from 1959. This time, the story is told from the point of view of the antagonist Maleficent, ‘the mistress of all evil’, portrayed by Angelina Jolie. Needless to say, this will be a darker version of the tale and of course Lana Del Rey’s musical style is suitable for this. She turns ‘Once Upon A Dream’ into a dark, moody, melancholic and above all simply beautiful ballad. Her deep voice matches perfectly with the dark atmosphere that is created by the drums and strings. There is something quite ominous about the track and this is exactly the feeling it should give off when you hear the song play in the new trailer for the movie.
For The Great Gatsby, Del Rey wrote a new track that told the story from the perspective of one of the main characters in a very personal way and was used at one of the most beautiful scenes in the movie. With the soundtrack for Maleficent, Lana proves she is capable of completely reinventing an existing song and creating a perfectly fitting atmosphere for the movie, which is quite a rare quality. This is the first new material we hear from Del Rey in 2014, but definitely not the last. Her second album Ultraviolence is set to come out later this year.

Lana Del Rey stelt duistere soundtrack voor Maleficent voor
Vorig jaar maakte Lana Del Rey indruk met de betoverend mooie soundtrack ‘Young & Beautiful’ voor de film The Great Gatsby. Het is dan ook onbegrijpelijk dat deze track niet genomineerd werd voor een Golden Globe of Oscar in de categorie beste soundtrack. Del Rey laat nu echter weer zien dat haar songs meer dan geschikt zijn als filmmuziek met een nieuwe versie van de Disney classic ‘Once Upon A Dream’, die gebruikt zal worden als de soundtrack van de nieuwe film Maleficent. Del Rey maakt van het charmante liefdesliedje iets compleet anders, maar absoluut iets indrukwekkends.
De nieuwe film Maleficent is zowel een prequel als een nieuwe kijk op Disney’s Sleeping Beauty (Doornroosje) uit 1959. Deze keer wordt het verhaal echter verteld vanuit het slechte personage, de heks Maleficent, gespeeld door Angelina Jolie. Het is dan ook vanzelfsprekend dat dit een meer duistere versie van het verhaal zal zijn, waar Lana’s muziekstijl uiteraard goed bij van pas komt. Ze verandert ‘Once Upon A Dream’ in een donkere, melancholische, zware, maar bovenal prachtige ballade. Het diepe stemgeluid van Del Rey gaat perfect samen met de donkere sfeer die is gecreëerd door de drums en strijkinstrumenten. Er hangt iets onheilspellends in de lucht bij deze song en dat is precies het gevoel dat afgegeven moet worden als je ‘Once Upon A Dream’ hoort in combinatie met de trailer van de film.
Voor The Great Gatsby schreef Del Rey een volledig nieuwe song die het verhaal van de film op een persoonlijke wijze via één van de personages vertelt. Het werd tevens gebruikt tijdens één van de meest mooie en passende scènes uit de film. Met de soundtrack voor Maleficent laat Lana juist horen dat ze ook perfect in staat is een bestaand lied opnieuw uit te vinden en deze qua sound naadloos in de sfeer van de film over te laten gaan. Dit is absoluut een bijzondere kwaliteit. Deze soundtrack is het eerste nieuwe materiaal dat we van Lana horen dit jaar, maar er is ongetwijfeld nog veel meer op komst. In de loop van het jaar zal namelijk haar tweede officiële plaat Ultraviolence verschijnen.
