Shakira’s self titled album is bold mix of styles
It has been quite some time since Shakira released a new album. Her most recent effort came out in 2010, called Sale El Sol. After giving birth to a son and a job as judge on The Voice USA, the singer is back with a brand new selftitled record. Shakira’s music has always been a mix of influences from Latin, Arabic music, rock and pop. On this new album, her music is not that much influenced by latin styles, but still she manages to come up with a bold mix of styles that somehow feels like a cohesive body of work. Just like the first two singles, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ and ‘Empire’, most songs are completely different, but yet fit in perfectly with the album.
Although I found ‘Empire‘ the more interesting song out of the two, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You‘ did its job as first single with a huge hook and a great feature by Rihanna. On a song like ‘Empire’ however, Shakira shows some more personality and identity and it is an absolutely great song with lovely lyrics and a beautiful melody. On the album, there are no songs that could be compared to either one of the singles. Shakira. opens with ‘Dare (La la La)’, an uptempo banger that will be used for the World Championships soccer this summer as well in its ‘Rio 2014’ version. The track, produced by RedOne sounds a little generic on first listen, but the melody is just too infectious to ignore it. Especially the ‘Is it true that you love me? I dare you to kiss me’ hook is amazingly catchy. If this will be promoted properly around the World Cup, this could be the smash hit of this summer.
Once again, ‘Dare’ is the only track in this style on the album and definitely the most uptempo dancey moment. In an interview about every track on the album she called ‘You Don’t Care About Me’ as her most alternative moment to date. The song has a strong message with great lyrics, and sonically reminds a bit of Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. One of the absolute highlights on the record is ‘Cut Me Deep’, a collaboration with Canadian reggae band MAGIC!. Shakira’s vocals sound perfect on the song that starts out with a lazy reggae rhythm, but then bursts explosively into a rock song towards the end of the track. This track shows how only Shakira can mix such a great pop hook with all kinds of different styles, which she did on her most famous singles like ‘Whenever Wherever’, ‘Objection’, ‘Ojos Asi’ and ‘La Tortura’. Shakira even tried some country on this album with the duet ‘Medicine’ with her The Voice colleague Blake Shelton, which will obviously become a hit in the US.
Shakira also recorded some pop-rock songs like ‘Spotlight’, that sounds a bit too much like an Avril Lavigne song especially in the verses, and ‘The Next Thing’, obviously the better of the two with a fabulous Rihanna-esque middle-eight. ‘Broken Record’ and ’23’ are both nice acoustic love songs, but neither of them reaches the heights of songs like ‘Underneath Your Clothes’ and ‘The One’ from her Laundry Service album. Like most pop records by female artists these days, a track written by Sia Furler could not be excluded. Shakira recorded ‘Chasing Shadows’ for the deluxe edition and it is once again a fine composition by the Australian pop artist.
Shakira. is a lovely album with great diversity and some of her best moments so far, but as a body of work, it does not reach the heights of her previous work like Laundry Service, Donde Estan Los Ladrones and the Oral Fixation albums.

Album recensie: Shakira – Shakira.
Shakira presenteert weer grote mix van stijlen op nieuwe plaat
Het was alweer een tijdje geleden dat Shakira haar laatste album lanceerde. In 2010 kwam haar meest recente plaat Sale El Sol uit. Sindsdien zette ze een zoontje op de wereld en jureerde ze in de Amerikaanse versie van The Voice, maar nu is het weer tijd om zich op haar eigen muziek te concentreren met de nieuwe naar zichzelf vernoemde plaat. Zoals we van haar gewend zijn, komt Shakira weer met een bonte verzameling aan stijlen op de proppen. Dit keer zijn er iets minder invloeden uit latin te horen, maar toch is er nog steeds genoeg diversiteit te vinden dat ze tegelijkertijd als één geheel weet laten klinken.
De eerste twee singles ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ en ‘Empire’ klinken totaal verschillend maar passen beide prima op het album. Hoewel ‘Empire’ duidelijk de interessantere song van de twee is, heeft ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ het prima gedaan als eerste single met een pakkend ritme en een leuke bijdrage van Rihanna. Op ‘Empire’ horen we meer het eigenzinnige geluid waar Shakira om bekendstaat, vol persoonlijkheid. Daarnaast is het ook gewoon een prachtige song met een mooie melodie en een sterke tekst. De waarschijnlijke volgende single klinkt echter weer totaal anders. ‘Dare (La La La)’ is een door RedOne geproduceerde dance track met een groots refrein en pakkende melodie. Op het eerste gehoor klinkt het wat standaard en identiteitsloos, maar de melodie is zo pakkend dat je er niet omheen kunt. Vooral ook de hook wanneer ze zingt ‘Is it true that you love me? I dare you to kiss me’, is briljant.
Ook voor deze song geldt dat het de enige in deze soort op de plaat is. In een interview over alle liedjes op het album merkte Shakira op dat ‘You Don’t Care About Me’ haar meest alternatieve moment tot nu toe is. Het lied heeft een pittige tekst en sterke boodschap en doet qua sound hier en daar wat denken aan Gotye’s ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’. Absoluut één van de hoogtepunten van het album is ‘Cut Me Deep’, een samenwerking met de Canadese reggaeband MAGIC!. Shakira’s stem komt perfect tot uiting tijdens de luie reggae beat in het begin, maar ook tijdens de climax waarin de track transformeert in een rock song. Dit lied is een perfect voorbeeld van Shakira’s uitzonderlijke kwaliteit om sterke poprefreinen te mixen met allerlei andere stijlen. Op dit album waagt ze zich zelfs aan een country duet met Blake Shelton, haar collega bij The Voice USA. Op de Amerikaanse radio zal het ongetwijfeld een hit worden.
Voor deze plaat nam Shakira ook nog een aantal pop-rock songs op, zoals het aardige ‘Spotlight’, dat in de coupletten wel erg veel wegheeft van Avril Lavigne, en ‘The One Thing’, duidelijk de betere van de twee met een Rihanna-achtige bridge. Ook staan er nog twee akoestische liefdjesliedjes op in de vorm van ‘Broken Record’ en ’23’. Het zijn geen slechte liedjes, maar ze halen het zeker niet bij Shakira’s eerdere werk in dit genre zoals ‘The One’ en ‘Underneath Your Clothes’. ZOals bij de meeste popalbums uitgebracht door vrouwelijke artiesten, kon hier een bijdrage van Sia Furler ook niet uitblijven. De Australische popartieste schreef de deluxe-track ‘Chasing Shadows’, wederom een fijne compositie.
Shakira. is een mooi album met grote diversiteit en een aantal sterke hoogtepunten, maar als totaalplaatje kan het zich niet meten aan voorgangers als Laundry Service, Donde Estan Los Ladrones en het Oral Fixation tweeluik.

Shakira surprises with brilliant second single
Just when you think Shakira kind of lost it, she comes back swinging with a great new track. The Rihanna collaboration ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’, that functioned as the first single from her new album, did not really sound like the smash hit it was supposed to be. Although the track did quite well worldwide, her team probably hoped for a bigger hit. In order to promote the upcoming album release, Shakira premiered the new track ‘Empire’, which sounds nothing like the previous single, but might be one of her best songs since quite some time.
Although ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ was definitely not a bad song, it was quite a safe and uninspired choice for a first single. It did have a nice pop chorus, but other than that, it was a rather bland song. This definitely does not go for the second single ‘Empire’, which could be described as edgy and exciting. ‘Empire’ is a mid-tempo track that starts off quietly and then builds into a great melodic chorus. The post chorus is introduced with the words ‘and you touch me and I’m like…’, followed by heavily distorted vocals that bring a very catchy ‘oooooooh’ to the table. Everything from the chorus on is nothing less than a euphoric experience.
I have always really liked Shakira’s more quirky side. She is not just a produced pop singer, she is an artist with a lot of personality and an own style, but this potential is not used with all of her releases. It is good to see she is not chasing trends here, but following her own path that brings her to brilliant tracks like this. If I had to compare it to any of her previous releases, I would say it gives me the same vibes as gorgeous songs like ‘La Pared’ and ‘No’, that do not necessarily sound like huge hits, but show off her unique vocal style and feeling for great melodic masterpieces. Welcome back quirky Shaki!

Single Recensie: Shakira – Empire
Shakira verrast met ijzersterke tweede single
Net als je denkt dat Shakira ‘het’ niet meer heeft, slaat ze je spreekwoordelijk om de oren met een geweldige nieuwe single. De samenwerking met Rihanna, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’, klonk niet helemaal als de hit die men ervan verwachtte en hoewel de plaat het niet slecht deed in de hitlijsten wereldwijd, had haar label waarschijnlijk op meer gehoopt. Om haar aanstaande albumrelease te promoten, laat ze nu de twee single ‘Empire’ horen en die klinkt totaal anders dan zijn voorganger. Het is namelijk één van de beste Shakira-liedjes die ik in tijden heb gehoord.
Hoewel ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ niet per definitie een slecht lied is, was het wel een veilige en ongeïnspireerde keuze voor een eerste single. Het had een leuk poprefreintje, maar het was verder een nogal nietszeggend plaatje. Dit is zeker niet het geval met de opvolger. ‘Empire’ is een midtempo lied dat stilletjes begint en daarna opbouwt naar een groots, melodisch refrein. Het post-refrein wordt geïntroduceerd met de woorden ‘and you touch me and I’m like’ dat wordt gevolgd door een heftig vervormde stem dat een zeer pakkend gilletje ten gehore brengt. Eigenlijk is het lied vanaf het begin van het refrein een euforische ervaring.
Ik ben altijd een groot fan geweest van Shakira’s meer eigenzinnige kant. Ze is niet zomaar een geproduceerd popsterretje, maar een artieste met een grote persoonlijkheid en een geheel eigen stijl. Dit komt echter niet tot uiting in al haar werk. Het is goed om te merken dat Shakira er nu niet voor heeft gekozen om trends te volgen, maar juist haar eigen weg inslaat, die haar leidt naar eigenzinnige, maar indrukwekkende tracks als ‘Empire’. In vergelijking met haar eerdere materiaal, geeft het me dezelfde vibes als prachtige tracks als ‘La Pared’ en ‘No’, beide geen liedjes die klinken als een grote hit, maar wel bol staan van een eigen, unieke stijl met prachtige melodieën. Het is mooi om te horen dat deze kant van Shakira nog steeds aanwezig is!
Shakira and Rihanna team up for a proper pop banger
I think it is safe to say that the first highly anticipated and huge pop release of the year was dropped today. Shakira released her first new single since 2010 and asked Rihanna for some help. They recorded the track ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ together, which serves as the lead single for the upcoming new studio album by Shakira, that will come out in March. But is the song as good as you would expect from two pop super stars?
Let me start by saying that ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ (which is co-written by Swedish pop singer Erik Hassle) could be described as a typical Shakira track. It is undoubtedly recognizable as such and of course her characteristic vocal style adds to this. Stylistically, when compared to her previous material, it comes closest to ‘Animal City’, an album track from Oral Fixation Part 2. It mixes pop with some influences from ska, which reminds a bit of the sound that made No Doubt famous. The verses are nice, although Shakira’s diction is a bit poor at some points which makes it hard to understand what she is actually singing. The chorus is powerful and the ‘woah’ parts are undeniably catchy. During the chorus the song sounds slightly more rock influenced which works quite well.
I think it was a great decision to let Rihanna feature on this song. The song would not have been ruined if she was not on it, but she definitely adds something to it as her voice really fits the style and melts really well with Shakira for that matter. To be quite honest, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ does not come close to either of the two singers’ best material, but it is an unpretentious, catchy and fun pop track that could easily become a big hit over the next few weeks. Having said that, I hope Shakira’s album, that will be released at the 25th of March, will feature some stronger and more interesting songs as well.

Shakira en Rihanna brengen 2014’s eerste pop hit
Ik denk dat ik niet overdrijf als ik zeg dat vandaag de eerste grote pop release hoge verwachtingen van waren, plaatsvond. Shakira bracht haar eerste single sinds 2010 uit en vroeg Rihanna hierbij om hulp. Ze namen het lied ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ op, wat nu als lead single voor Shakira’s album, dat in maart verschijnt, wordt gebruikt. Maar is de song eigenlijk wel zo goed als je zou verwachten van twee pop supersterren?
Laat ik beginnen met te zeggen dat ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ als een typische Shakira track klinkt. Haar stijl is ontegenzeggelijk direct herkenbaar en natuurlijk speelt haar karakteristieke stemgeluid hier ook een rol in. Wanneer je de stijl van het lied vergelijkt met haar eerdere materiaal, valt deze single het beste te vergelijken met ‘Animal City’, een albumtrack van Oral Fixation Part 2. Het mixt pop met wat invloeden uit ska, wat weer enigszins doet denken aan de stijl waarmee No Doubt populair werd. De coupletten klinken zeer aardig, hoewel Shakira’s gezang soms wat onverstaanbaar overkomt. Het refrein is krachtig en de ‘woah’ kreten zijn absoluut pakkend. Tijdens het refrein krijgt het lied een wat meer rockende aankleding, wat goed werkt om het wat kracht bij te zetten.
Het was zeker een goed idee om Rihanna een feature te geven op deze single. Het lied zou niet meteen een stuk minder goed zijn zonder haar, maar ze voegt toch zeker wel wat toe doordat haar stem goed bij het lied past en ook nog eens goed mengt met het geluid van Shakira. Om heel eerlijk te zijn komt ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’ niet in de buurt van het beste materiaal van beide zangeressen, maar het is een onpretentieus, lekker in het gehoor liggend popliedje dat ongetwijfeld een grote hit zal blijken in de komende weken. Dat gezegd hebbende, hoop ik wel dat Shakira’s album, dat op 25 maart zal verschijnen, ook wat sterkere en interessantere liedjes zal bevatten.

10. Loreen
Loreen rose to fame after winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 with the song ‘Euphoria’. It became a big hit across Europe and the singer released her debut album Heal. Loreen was supposed to go on a tour in December, but she postponed it because she wanted to work on new material in the studio first. She has been posting some pictures from the studio ever since so it seems fair to expect she will release something new in the near future, right? Right!
09. Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean released his debut album Channel Orange in 2012 and received high praise from music critics. The record did quite well charts wise as well and the singer has been working on some new material, that he already introduced on his recent tour. The singer has been recording in the studio quite some time, so a 2014 release seems likely. If the quality of Channel Orange is anything to go by, Frank Ocean will make another defining quality R&B record.
08. Lily Allen
Lily Allen started a huge comeback at the end of 2013. She released her most recent album in 2009 and announced to quit music. Luckily she came back though, with the singles ‘Hard Out Here’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’, a cover of the Keane song. The latter gave her a number 1 hit in the United Kingdom. Her album is supposed to come out in a few months and she will premiere the new song ‘Air Balloon’ this week. It is good to have her back!
07. Marina & The Diamonds
There is no official announcement made yet, that said Marina & The Diamonds will return with a new album in 2014. It is very likely however, as the singer finished her Electra Heart era with a video for the song with the same name. At the end, Marina wipes out Electra’s heart on her cheek, which symbolized the end of the campaign. It has been almost two years since the album came out, so I would expect a new release from Marina in the second part of 2014. I surely hope I am right!
06. Paloma Faith
In 2012, Paloma Faith had a very successful year with the release of her sophomore album Fall To Grace. After a tour through the UK, the singer started working on a new record, which will be released on the 3rd of March. This was announced earlier this week on the social media pages of the singer. Her new single ‘Can’t Rely On You’ will be premiered this week. If it is just as good as her previous album and the great single ‘Picking Up The Pieces’, I cannot wait to hear it!
05. Kylie Minogue
Kylie’s most recent studio album Aphrodite was released in 2010. She went on a big tour the next year and celebrated her 25 years in music. In 2013 she signed a management deal with Roc Nation for a fresh new chapter in her career. This new phase started with the promo single ‘Skirt’ last year. The official first single, ‘Into The Blue’, will premiere later this month and is officially released on the 16th of March in the United Kingdom. I guess we are all ready for Kylie’s glorious return to the dance floor.
04. Sia
This woman was all over pop music last year, but she only released two songs herself. The beautiful and understated ‘Kill And Run’ was used for The Great Gatsby soundtrack and the outstanding collaboration with Diplo and The Weeknd, ‘Elastic Heart’, was featured on the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Other than that, she wrote songs for pop stars like Céline Dion, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Birdy and many more. Let’s not forget her hits with David Guetta and the worldwide smash hit ‘Diamonds’ she wrote for Rihanna. This year, she will release her own songs for a change and if the above mentioned tracks are anything to go by, it will be bloody brilliant.

It has been quite a few years since we got new material from Shakira. Her most recent album Sale El Sol came out in 2010. In January 2013, Shakira gave birth to a son and she was a judge on The Voice US for one season. She has also been working on a lot of new music with a great variety of famous producers, DJ’s and writers. The first single, ‘Can’t Remember To Forget You’, which features Rihanna, will come out this week. All I hope for the new record is to bring the best of Shakira’s both worlds: ‘Don’t Bother’-style pop/rock and ‘La Tortura’-style latin pop. That would be amazing, now wouldn’t it?
02. Lana Del Rey
Two years after the release of her album Born To Die, of course it is time for a new record. Lana Del Rey has been busy in the meantime, recording and releasing new tracks for Paradise, an afterthought on Born To Die. Last year she was featured on the soundtrack of the movie The Great Gatsby, with the gorgeous ‘Young and Beautiful’ and in December, she put out her short film Tropico. At the premiere of the film she announced her new album is called Ultraviolence and it is probably supposed to be released in 2014. She is said to be working with the same people who produced Born To Die. Bring it on Lana!

There is no doubt about the fact that lots of people are eagerly waiting for a new album by Adele. After the huge successes of her previous record 21, the expectations are extremely high. It might be impossible for her to top that success story, but I am pretty sure that she will make a huge impact on the pop music scene again. Her publicist Paul Moss announced last week that her new album will definitely be released in 2014. The release of 24 (or whatever the record might be called) is coming closer!
