Nina Nesbitt plays spontaneous acoustic set in Amsterdam
Nina Nesbitt visited Amsterdam to play her first headlining show in Bitterzoet. The young Scottish singer-songwriter managed to sell out her first gig here, but did not bring her band with her. Nesbitt decided to do an acoustic set in the busy venue. For just over an hour it was Nina, a guitar and a piano that turned out to be enough to captivate the audience. Because she did not have her band with her, there was no setlist which gave room to the audience to shout requests. Nina improvised, broke her chair and invited some fans over on the stage to sing along. The acoustic setting made Nesbitt’s first show in the Netherlands a spontaneous and somewhat chaotic debut.
Nesbitt started out her performance with ‘The Apple Tree’, a song which she already released in 2012 on an EP with the same name. The song was also included on the deluxe edition of her debut album Peroxide, that was released in February of this year. Nina decided to play some more older tracks like ‘Just Before Goodbye’, that did not make the album. Because her music developed into a more pop-based style with a full band sound, she probably decided to play covers and tracks that fitted better into an acoustic setting in her opinion. When she asked the crowd what songs to play, they often shouted the names of the newer tracks from the album so she had to play some of those as well.
She sat down behind the piano to sing ‘Hold You’, a duet with the band Kodaline, when two young fans asked her to sing the track with her on stage. Nina agreed and placed them behind the microphone while singing along. The fans were quite emotional about the fact they were on stage with Nesbitt and one broke down crying, so it was still mainly Nina singing the song and luckily so, because the song sounds even more emotional and pure when performed live. Another emotional highlight of the gig was ‘The Hardest Part’, an heartbreaking song about loss of love that Nina named as her favourite track on the album. The crowd was silently listening to Nina telling this painful story in a beautiful and touching way.
Nina also played some more uptempo songs like her single ‘Selfies’, which is definitely the most poppy thing she recorded so far, but fits her very well. During her performance of this song she had to stop because a fan on the front row did not feel well and she only finished the song after she was sure the girl was alright. ‘Tough Luck’ turned out to be a fan favourite, but Nesbitt doubted if she should sing it, as she was not sure it would sound good in an acoustic setting. When she finally played the song it was the best moment of the whole show with her singing so convincingly and properly showing the power in her flawless vocals.
She finished the show with ‘Stay Out’, her biggest hit in the UK so far that the crowd enthusiastically sang along to. Although this kind of improvised acoustic setting definitely has its charm, it would be great to see Nina with her band next time, playing great songs like the title track ‘Peroxide’, that should not have been left out in Bitterzoet.

Nina Nesbitt speelt spontane maar chaotische set in Bitterzoet
Nina Nesbitt bracht op zondagavond voor het eerst een bezoek aan Amsterdam voor een eigen show. De zangeres trad op in een uitverkocht Bitterzoet. De jonge Schotse singer-songwriter bracht haar band niet mee en was dus genoodzaakt om een akoestische set te spelen voor de volle zaal. Iets meer dan een uur was het slechts Nina, haar gitaar en piano die het publiek moesten vermaken en dit lukte met gemak. Doordat de band er niet was had ze geen vaste setlist, wat het publiek de ruimte gaf om verzoekjes te roepen. Ze improviseerde, zakte door haar stoel en nodigde fans op het podium uit om mee te doen. De akoestische setting maakte van Nina’s debuut in Nederland een spontaan, maar chaotisch optreden.
De hoogblonde zangeres begon haar optreden met ‘The Apple Tree’, een lied van de gelijknamige EP uit 2012. De track kreeg ook een plekje op de deluxe editie van haar debuutalbum Peroxide, dat afgelopen februari verscheen. Later speelde ze nog meer oudere tracks zoals ‘Just Before Goodbye’. Ze koos hier waarschijnlijk voor omdat deze songs en een aantal covers beter in een akoestische setting pasten, dan sommige liedjes van haar debuutalbum, waarop ze zichzelf een meer poppy geluid met een volledige band aanmat. Toen ze haar publiek echter liet kiezen, werden er meestal nieuwe songs van het debuutalbum aangevraagd, waardoor ze hier ook wel wat van moest spelen.
Toen ze achter de piano plaatsnam om ‘Hold You’, een duet met de band Kodaline, te gaan zingen vroegen twee brutale fans of ze misschien met haar mochten zingen op het podium. Toen Nina dit echter toestond en de twee achter een microfoon plaatste, barstte de ene in tranen uit en wisten ze niet heel veel geluid meer te produceren. Misschien ook maar beter, want Nesbitt zelf gaf een wonderschone en emotionele vertolking van de ballad. Een ander emotioneel hoogtepunt van de avond was haar live versie van ‘The Hardest Part’, een aangrijpende ballad over het verliezen van liefde, wat ze zelf bestempelt als haar favoriete song op het album. Ze wist het publiek muisstil te krijgen met een breekbaar optreden.
Gelukkig speelde de Schotse ook een aantal songs waar wat meer tempo in zit, zoals de single ‘Selfies’, dat zeker haar meest poppy moment tot nu toe is, maar perfect bij haar past. Tijdens de uitvoering hiervan moest ze echter stoppen, omdat een fan op de eerste rij zich niet goed voelde. Nesbitt ging pas verder waar ze gebleven was toen ze zeker wist dat het meisje oké was. De track ‘Tough Luck’ bleek een favoriet onder de fans te zijn, maar Nina wist niet zeker of dit lied goed uit de verf zou komen met enkel een gitaar. Toen ze het uiteindelijk toch speelde bleek het een hoogtepunt te zijn waarbij ze de volle kracht in haar stem liet horen.
Het optreden werd beëindigd met ‘Stay Out’, haar grootste hit in het Verenigd Koninkrijk tot nu toe. Hoewel zo’n spontaan akoestisch optreden zeker z’n charme heeft, zou ik Nina graag nog eens live zien, maar dan met band waarbij ze de beste stukken van haar nieuwe album speelt, zoals de titeltrack ‘Peroxide’, die eigenlijk in Bitterzoet ook niet achterwege had mogen blijven.
