Rebecca Ferguson treats fans to classy and soulful performance in Amsterdam
Rebecca Ferguson rose to fame when she participated in the British version of X Factor in 2010. She managed to finish as the runner-up and immediately signed a deal after the final. In the period after X Factor, Rebecca was able to set herself apart from most of the other talent competition participants by co-writing all of the songs on her successful debut album Heaven. At the end of last year Ferguson showed growth with the release of her sophomore record Freedom. The mix of her soulful vocals, beautiful melodies and honest lyrics easily captivated the audience for over 90 minutes during her first concert in the Netherlands.
For the gig in the MC Theater in Amsterdam she also brought a supporting act with her. The chatty sisters of the band Daughters of Davis performed an acoustic set where they played guitars and percussion themselves. Their little stories in between the tracks are entertaining and the songs themselves are definitely enjoyable as well. ‘Where Do We Go’, ‘Just Let Go’ and ‘Take My Soul’, for which they even translated a sentence to Dutch, are all strong songs with catchy hooks and the fact that their voices sound so different, one sounds raw and louder while the other has softer and sweeter vocals, makes their performance all the more interesting.
Rebecca Ferguson comes on stage, classy looking as always, with a band existing of five musicians and two very charismatic backing singers. Ferguson sits down to perform ‘Fake Smile’, one of the tracks on her second album. After that she immediately gets the crowd going with the swinging first single ‘I Hope’. The first part of the gig focuses on Freedom, the second record, with a stunning performance of the fragile title track that manages to captivate a completely silent audience. The more uptempo ‘We’ll Be Fine’, that reminds a bit of Emeli Sandé’s style, also gets a very positive feedback from the crowd. The interaction between her and her backing singers is great when she performs the powerful ‘Hanging On’ and a reggae arrangement of the catchy ‘Beautiful Design’.
During the second part of her show, there is a little more emphasis on songs from her debut record Heaven, to which the audience sings along enthusiastically. She sits down to sing heartfelt versions of the ballads ‘Shoulder To Shoulder’ and ‘Teach Me How To Be Loved’ and performs a little routine with her swinging backing singer during ‘Backtrack’, one of the most poppy and catchy tracks she has released so far. When you compare her way of performing now to how she stood on stage during X Factor, she has grown so much from a shy girl that looked at the ground constantly in a cute little soul diva with an endearing stage presence.
Rebecca also decided to put a few covers into her setlist. Her version of Tom Odell’s ‘Another Love’ is gorgeous and almost sounds like he wrote it with her voice in mind. Her cover of Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ is vocally outstanding and altough her renditions of Prince and Tina Turner tracks do not bring anything new to the table, the audience really enjoys the swinging covers. Ferguson literally saved the best for last with the last track ‘My Best’, being one of the standouts on her second album, which comes to life even more in a swinging arrangement by her faultless band. Of course she comes back once more to sing her biggest hit to date, ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’. Ferguson shows she has grown when it comes to her stage presence as well as vocally. At times she moved the crowd with emotional performances of touching ballads, but at the same time got them dancing to swinging soul songs. She proves herself to be a versitale, soulful and classy performer.

Rebecca Ferguson trakteert haar fans op een soul- en stijlvolle show
Rebecca Ferguson brak groots door toen ze auditie deed voor de Britse versie van X Factor in 2010, waar ze uiteindelijk als tweede eindigde. De zangeres tekende na de finale gelijk een platencontract en in de periode die volgde wist ze zich gelijk te onderscheiden van haar medekandidaten. Ferguson liet zich namelijk niets opdragen en schreef zelf mee aan alle liedjes op haar succesvolle debuutplaat Heaven. Eind vorig jaar liet ze nog meer groei zien met het uitbrengen van de opvolger Freedom. De mix van haar soulvolle vocalen, mooie melodieën en eerlijke teksten wist het publiek tijdens haar eerste concert op Nederlandse bodem ruim anderhalf te boeien.
Voor het optreden in het MC Theater te Amsterdam bracht Ferguson ook nog een voorprogramma mee. De praatgrage zusjes van Sisters of Davis speelden een akoestische set waarbij ze zichzelf met gitaar en percussie begeleiden. De anekdotes die het aanstekelijke duo tussen de liedjes door vertellen zijn vermakelijk en de nummers zelf zijn ook absoluut niet overdienstelijk. ‘Where Do We Go’, ‘Just Let Go’ en ‘Take My Soul’, waarbij ze zelfs nog een zinnetje in het Nederlands hebben ingestudeerd, zijn allen pakkende liedjes met sterke melodieën. Het feit dat de twee vocale tegenpolen van elkaar blijken, de één heeft een wat ruwere, luidere stem terwijl de ander juist lief en zacht klinkt, maakt hun set des te interessanter.
Rebecca Ferguson komt, stijlvol als altijd, gekleed in een kort jurkje op en neemt meteen plaats op haar kruk om ‘Fake Smile’, een track van haar nieuwe album, ten gehore te brengen. Ze wordt vergezeld door een vijfkoppige band en een charismatische achtergrondzanger en zangeres. Ferguson en haar band weten het publiek meteen los te krijgen met de opzwepende eerste single ‘I Hope’. Het eerste deel van haar optreden is vooral gefocust op de liedjes van haar tweede album ‘Freedom’. Uitschieters zijn een prachtige uitvoering van de pure en breekbare titeltrack waarbij het publiek in stilte aan haar lippen hangt en het swingende ‘We’ll Be Fine’, waarbij de stijl af en toe wat aan Britse collega Emeli Sandé doet denken. De uitstekende wisselwerking tussen Rebecca en haar backing singers komt goed naar voren bij het krachtige ‘Hanging On’ en een zomerse reggae uitvoering van ‘Beautiful Design’.
Tijdens het tweede gedeelte legt de zangeres meer nadruk op liedjes van haar debuutalbum die door de fans uit volle borst worden meegezongen. Ze gaat zitten om klein gehouden uitvoeringen van de ballads ‘Shoulder To Shoulder’ en ‘Teach Me How To Be Loved’ te brengen en voert een kleine choreografie uit samen met haar energieke achtergrondzanger op het swingende ‘Backtrack’, haar meest poppy single tot nu toe. Wanneer je haar manier van optreden nu vergelijkt met haar tijd bij X Factor, heeft ze een indrukwekkende groei doorgemaakt van verlegen meisje dat enkel naar de grond kijkt, naar een zelfbewuste, maar nog altijd aandoenlijke soul diva.
Ferguson kleedde haar setlist verder aan met enkele covers. Zo zong ze een prachtige versie van Tom Odell’s ‘Another Love’, wat klonk alsof hij het heeft geschreven met haar stem in gedachten. Verder deed ze een vocaal krachtige versie van Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ en waren haar vertolkingen van hits van Prince en Tina Turner niets nieuws onder de zon, maar zeker wel vermakelijk voor het publiek. Ze bewaarde het beste letterlijk voor het laatst in de vorm van het lied ‘My Best’, dat tot één van de hoogtepunten van haar tweede album gerekend mag worden. Het lied kwam live met een sterk arrangement door haar vakkundige band nog meer tot leven. Uiteraard kwam ze nog even terug om ook haar grootste hit tot nu toe, ‘Nothing’s Real But Love’ te spelen. Rebecca liet in het MC Theater zien dat ze zowel vocaal als op het gebied van uitstraling behoorlijk gegroeid is. Ze weet zowel de kleine en emotionele tracks als de swingende, uptempo liedjes met overgave te brengen. Rebecca Ferguson is een veelzijdige, soulvolle en stijlvolle artieste geworden.
