Always wondered what pop artists themselves listen to whenever they are not on stage or writing new music? It’s time to find out! A Bit of Pop Music brings you Friday’s Five Tunes, a selection of five favourite songs by a current pop artist. This week it is Theia’s turn!

Theia first made an impact in the music industry of her home country New Zealand back in 2016 when her incredibly catchy single ‘Roam’ became a huge streaming hit. A debut EP followed in 2017 and this year a new chapter started for her. In Spring she dropped the dark electro pop tune ‘Bye Bye’ and today the follow up is out. The brand new track is titled ‘Bad Idea’ and is all about overcoming her personal battles. She does so over a bright and shiny electro pop chorus with soulful vocals and a hook so strong it would not be out of place on a Taylor Swift record. In between penning down great pop tracks, Theia took some time to tell us about her five favourite tracks!

Diana Gordon – Kool Aid
“Nostalgic, uplifting and somber, ‘Kool Aid’ is about heartbreak and hope. I can’t stop grooving to this at home and in the car. Diana is a force and if you don’t know her you’ll know of songs she’s written; ‘Sorry’, ‘Don’t Hurt Yourself’ and ‘Daddy Lessons’ for Beyoncé being a few.”

The Secret Sisters – Mississippi
“I am obsessed with every song on this record. The Secret Sisters’ lyricism and storytelling is unparalleled and their harmonies are laudable. I love to listen to their record at home and on the road, it lends itself to long drives through the countryside.”

Kim Petras – Can’t Do Better
“Love this girl! ‘Can’t Do Better’ sounds like a Katy Perry pop anthem fused with gritty Charli XCX-esque vocals. Also, her story and strength are incredible.”

Kanye West & Paul McCartney – Only One
“My Kui (grandmother) was my heart and I love listening to this song imagining that she’s singing to me too, like Donda was through Kanye.”

Tommy Genesis – Execute
“This track psyches me up. I blast this in shoots, before shows… all the time. It’s strong and sassy. I love her husky vocal and hard prod. Tommy is a dream collaborator for sure.”

Thank you for the great list Theia! Now it is time to listen to some of your very own tunes. Check out the fantastic new single ‘Bad Idea’ and if anyone has been sleeping on her so far, scroll down to hear the magnificent ‘Roam’.
