Lady Gaga still on top of her game in Ziggo Dome
After having to postpone the European leg of her Joanne World Tour that was supposed to take place back in October, Lady Gaga finally returned to the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on Saturday night. The pop star released her fifth studio album Joanne back in 2016 and it marked quite a change of direction in her career. With a more organic sound and less outrageous visuals, the singer and songwriter showed a different side to her art. Although she might do things a little different these days, she still knows how to put on a SHOW!

The fact Lady Gaga had to postpone her tour had everything to do with her (mental) health, which often makes her struggle with spasms and body pains. This was one of the main revelations of Gaga: Five Foot Two the documentary about the pop star released on Netflix last year (review here), which was shown as a ‘supporting act’ before her concert. Around 8:30pm Gaga took the stage, kicking off with fiery versions of Joanne tracks ‘Diamond Heart’ and ‘A-Yo’. What followed was a bold mix of her biggest hits and most of her new songs and even some unexpected previous album tracks (‘ScheiBe’ and ‘Bloody Mary’) that never got the single treatment!

To be able to perform all those hits (the woman has quite a few to her name), she had to shorten quite a few of them, which worked to keep the pace of the show high. The only song that suffered from this was comeback single ‘Perfect Illusion’ which missed its big climax. Gaga brought a full band and a bunch of dancers that helped her create the big production that the Joanne World Tour is. I can’t help but feel that in some ways, Gaga and her team took a bit too much on their plates with the numerous costume changes. More than once the audience had to wait through an instrumental outro and a video (admitted, these were beautifully shot and definitely entertaining) on screen which made the show feel a bit fragmented. The same goes for the different small stages in the middle of the arena which Gaga reached by bridges that moved up and down. For the people who had a place in the audience on the spots where the bridges came down, the view was quite restricted at times (and yes, I was one of those people). Therefore the going up and down between the stages become a bit too much towards the end.

Luckily these are only minor complaints about a show that came pretty close to perfection in other ways. Lady Gaga is a true show woman who knows exactly how to play with her audience. When she wants them to stand up, or jump, that is what they do. At the same time she shows a lot of respect for her fans, comforting them when they feel like outsiders and assuring them that tonight everyone is equal and loved, even those who don’t believe in equality. She is a great vocalist who does not miss a note, even when performing intense choreography, balancing on the moving parts of the main stage. Especially during ‘ScheiBe’ and ‘Bad Romance’, one of the biggest hits of the night, an overview of the tilting stage looked stunning.

Compared to her previous shows, Gaga performed more slow songs, giving her voice more time to truly shine. She moved the audience to tears with a piano version of ‘The Edge of Glory’ and title track ‘Joanne’, which is dedicated to her aunt who passed away years before Gaga was born. She saved ballad ‘Million Reasons’, which was the biggest hit of the Joanne era, for last. A few years ago a slow song to end a Lady Gaga show would have been almost unthinkable, but tonight she touched our souls one last time by belting out the break-up song. Lady Gaga might have toned down the theatricals slighty and moved on to a more organic sound, but she still knows how to put on a swinging, visually appealing pop show. The Gaga is still very much on top of her game!

Concert Recensie: Lady Gaga in Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam

Lady Gaga is nog steeds wereldster van formaat in Ziggo Dome
Nadat ze in oktober 2017 het Europese gedeelte van haar Joanne World Tour moest uitstellen, streek Lady Gaga op zaterdagavond eindelijk weer neer op het podium van de Ziggo Dome te Amsterdam. De popster bracht in 2016 haar vijfde album Joanne uit, dat een behoorlijke verandering van koers in haar carrière betekende. Ze ging voor een meer organisch geluid en de uitbundige outfits liet ze grotendeels achterwege. Dat betekent echter niet dat ze niet meer weet hoe ze een sprankelende show neer moet zetten.

De oorzaken voor het uitstellen van Gaga’s tour waren gezondheidsproblemen; de zangeres kampt geregeld met hevige pijnen in haar lichaam. Dit werd bij een breder publiek bekend nadat Netflix de documentaire Gaga: Five Foot Two uitbracht, die als ‘voorprogramma’ voor het concert werd laten zien. Gaga stapte rond half 9 het podium op en begon gelijk met knallende live versies van ‘nieuwe’ liedjes ‘Diamond Heart’ en ‘A-Yo’. Wat volgde was een bonte mix van haar grootste hits, de liedjes van het meest recente album en zelfs een aantal opvallende albumtracks van eerdere platen (‘SheiBe’ en ‘Bloody Mary’) die op de setlist terecht zijn gekomen.

Om zo goed als al haar hits ten gehore te brengen (de vrouw heeft er nogal wat), moeten behoorlijk wat liedjes ingekort worden om het tempo hoog te houden. Dit is over het algemeen niet storend, maar doet helaas comebacksingle ‘Perfect Illusion’ wel de das om, gezien de climax in het water valt. Gaga wordt continu bijgestaan door een voltallige band en een groep dansers, die een aanzienlijke rol spelen in de grote productie die de Joanne World Tour is. Soms voelt het echter alsof Gaga en haar team iets teveel hooi op de vork hebben genomen. De vele kledingwissels maken de show wat fragmentarisch, wanneer er eerst instrumentale outro’s en dan (overigens prachtig gemaakte) filmpjes op het scherm vertoond worden. Hetzelfde geldt voor de constructie met de verschillende kleinere podia door de zaal heen. Deze worden verbonden door bruggen die omhoog en naar beneden gaan om Gaga op haar plaats van bestemming te krijgen. Het idee is leuk, maar de uitwerking houdt soms te wensen over gezien de bruggen het zicht regelmatig blokkeren, zeker voor degenen die op de plaatsen staan waar de bruggen precies neerdalen (zoals ik…). Daarom voelt het heen en weer lopen (en vliegen van de bruggen dus) tegen het einde een beetje overbodig en afleidend.

Gelukkig zijn dit maar kleine smetjes op een verder wederom indrukwekkende show. Lady Gaga is een entertainer pur sang die als geen ander haar publiek kan bespelen. Wanneer Gaga ze vraagt op te staan, te springen of hun handen in de lucht te gooien, doen haar ‘klein monsters’ dat. Tegelijkertijd laat ze bewondering en respect voor haar fans zien door met hen te praten over acceptatie, gelijkheid en waarom het ok is om anders te zijn dan de meesten. Bij een Gaga concert is iedereen welkom, zelfs zij die tegen gelijkheid zijn. Naast dat ze haar hart op de juiste plek heeft, is er ook helemaal niets mis met haar stembanden. Ze mist geen enkele noot terwijl ze de ene na de andere intensieve choreografie opvoert. Vooral tijdens de visueel perfecte opvoeringen van ‘ScheiBe’ en grote hit ‘Bad Romance’ beweegt ze knap over de kantelende onderdelen van het podium. Wat een plaatje!

In vergelijking met haar eerdere shows neemt Gaga deze keer meer tijd voor ballads waarmee ze de kracht van haar stem pas echt laat horen. Tijdens een op piano uitgevoerde versie van ‘The Edge of Glory’ weet ze menigeen te raken en hetzelfde geldt voor titeltrack ‘Joanne’, die ze opdraagt aan haar tante die al ver voor Gaga’s geboorte op jonge leeftijd stierf. ‘Million Reasons’, de grootste hit van Joanne, bewaart Gaga voor het laatst. Enkele jaren geleden zou ik een ballad als afsluiter van een Gaga concert niet voor mogelijk hebben gehouden, maar vanavond raakte ze ons nog één keer diep met deze intense break-up song. Lady Gaga is misschien wat gaan minderen met de extravagante outfits en maakt tegenwoordig meer organische muziek, maar haar shows zijn nog steeds swingend, muzikaal foutloos en visueel prachtig in elkaar gezet. Gaga behoort nog altijd tot de absolute wereldtop der popsterren!
