Maria Mena experiments with sound on new record
Norwegian singer-songwriter Maria Mena is known for her sweet voice and beautiful songs like ‘Just Hold Me’, ‘All This Time (Pick-Me-Up Song)’ and ‘Miss You Love’. It has been a while since we have heard from her, as she releases her new album Weapon In Mind exactly two years after the release of her previous record Victoria. While Viktoria marked a change in her lyrical style (she left behind the demons from her difficult past), Mena changes her musical style on Weapon In Mind. She experiments with different sounds that one would not directly expect from her, which turns out to be a great change.
Earlier this year Maria Mena probably surprised quite some people with her single, ‘Fuck You’. The song deals with haters on the internet, that only dare to insult others when they are safe behind their keyboard and monitor. The song itself sounded more poppy than most of Mena’s output. She continued the interesting, slight changes in her music with ‘I Always Liked That’, in which she states she is happy in her own skin now. The dreamy production of the track introduced the slightly more electronic sound the album follows.
‘Interesting’, the opening track of the album, brings us Maria’s rawest vocals to date. She almost screams that “shit just got interesting”. She is absolutely right. Not that her previous work was boring or uninteresting (not at all, most of it has been pretty great), but it is great to see her try something different to keep things new and fresh. It must have been quite a step for Maria to change things up like this and it is a brave thing to do. She will probably not have to fear losing fans, as the quality of her material is still high and although she experiments, every track is still recognizable as Maria Mena.
For example on ‘All The Love’, Maria uses vocal effects in the chorus that remind a bit of Ellie Goulding, but it works perfectly with her own distinctive vocal style. The lyrics deal with very personal themes, like many of Mena’s songs. ‘All The Love’ is about Maria promising to never abandon her future daughters, like her mother did. The song seems to be a fan favourite and rightfully so, as it is one of the best things Weapon In Mind has to offer. Another highlight is ‘You’re All Telling Stories’. In the verses Maria’s typical song writing style is omnipresent, but the strong chorus is accompanied by synthesizers and beats. Once again Mena’s voice suits this more electronic sound perfectly.
Still, not every track on Weapon In Mind is influenced by these experiments. On ‘I’m Only Human’, ‘I Love You Too’ and ‘The End’ we hear a more classic Maria-sound. On ‘Madness’ she tries a slightly more pop/rock sounds, which works for her as well. The most poppy attempt on the album is the infectious ‘You Make Me Feel Good’, which at the same time is the happiest and carefree we might have ever heard from Mena. ‘You Hurt The Ones You Love – I Don’t Believe That’ probably summarizes the album best. It is beautifully orchestrated, has meaningful lyrics, some slight electronic effects and Maria’s ever so gorgeous vocals. Maria Mena proves herself once again with a strong collection of personal and touching songs.

Album Recensie: Maria Mena – Weapon In Mind
Maria Mena experimenteert met sound op nieuwe plaat
De Noorse singer-songwriter Maria Mena is vooral bekend van haar lieve stem en mooie liedjes als ‘Just Hold Me’, ‘All This Time (Pick-Me-Up Song)’ en ‘Miss You Love’. Het is alweer een tijdje geleden dat we iets van haar gehoord hebben. Haar nieuwe album Weapon In Mind kwam namelijk precies twee jaar na haar vorige plaat, Viktoria, uit. Waar Viktoria een ontwikkeling op het gebied van haar songteksten liet zien (ze liet de demonen uit haar zware verleden achter zich), laat Mena op Weapon In Mind vooral een verandering in sound horen. Ze experimenteert met geluiden die men niet direct van haar zou verwachten, maar dit blijkt een goede keuze te zijn.
Eerder dit jaar verraste Maria Mena ongetwijfeld een aantal mensen met haar nieuwe single, ‘Fuck You’. Het lied is een opgestoken middelvinger naar mensen die veilig achter hun toetsenbord en monitor, hun haatvolle berichten het internet op sturen. Het lied zelf klonk meer poppy dan het meeste van Maria’s werk. Ze ging verder met de interessante, lichte veranderingen in haar muziek op de tweede single ‘I Always Liked That’, waarop ze laat weten tegenwoordig helemaal tevreden te zijn met zichzelf. De dromerige productie introduceerde de lichtelijk elektronische sound die op het album terugkomt.
‘Interesting’, de eerste track van het album, bevat Maria’s meest rauwe vocalen tot nu toe. Ze schreeuwt haast dat “shit just got interesting”. En daar heeft ze volkomen gelijk in. Niet dat haar voorgaande werk saai of oninteressant was (integendeel, het merendeel was erg goed), maar het is goed om te zien dat ze met dit album nieuwe stijlen en geluiden probeert. Het moet geen gemakkelijke stap zijn geweest voor Mena om het roer ietwat om te gooien, wat haar zeker dapper maakt. Ze hoeft overigens niet bang te zijn dat ze met dit album fans kwijt zal raken, want het niveau van de songs ligt nog altijd even hoog, en ook al experimenteert ze hier meer, elke track is nog steeds herkenbaar als Maria Mena.
Op ‘All The Love’ bijvoorbeeld, gebruikt Maria vocale effecten die ook wel te horen zijn op platen van Ellie Goulding. Ze werken ook prima bij het onderscheidende stemgeluid van Mena. De tekst van deze song gaat weer over zeer persoonlijke thema’s, zoals we van haar gewend zijn. Op ‘All The Love’ belooft ze haar toekomstige dochters dat ze nooit door hun moeder in de steek gelaten zullen worden, zoals bij Maria zelf wel het geval is geweest. Het lied lijkt een favoriet te zijn bij de fans, wat begrijpelijk is, gezien het absoluut één van de beste tracks is, die Weapon In Mind te bieden heeft. Een ander hoogtepunt is ‘You’re All Telling Stories’. In de coupletten is Maria’s typische manier van liedjes schrijven duidelijk te horen, maar het sterke refrein wordt begeleid door beats en synthesizers. Ook hier past Mena’s stem perfect bij deze meer elektronische sound.
Tegelijkertijd is niet elke track op Weapon In Mind beïnvloed door experimenten. Op ballads als ‘I’m Only Human’, ‘I Love You Too’ en ‘The End’ is een meer klassieke Maria Mena te horen. Op ‘Madness’ neigt ze naar een wat meer pop/rock geluid, wat ook prima bij haar lijkt te passen. Het meest poppy lied op het album is het aanstekelijke ‘You Make Me Feel Good’, wat tegelijkertijd ook Maria van haar meest vrolijke en zorgeloze kant laat horen. ‘You Hurt The Ones You Love – I Don’t Believe That’ vat het album goed samen. Het is mooi georkestreerd, bevat betekenisvolle songteksten, hier en daar hoor je wat elektronische invloeden en Maria’s stem klinkt helder en loepzuiver als altijd. Maria Mena bewijst zichzelf nogmaals met een sterk album vol persoonlijke en treffende songs.
