Shawn Mendes starts new world tour in Amsterdam
Shawn Mendes kicked off his new Shawn Mendes The Tour in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. It is already the third world tour the young pop star is embarking on. The Canadian singer-songwriter started out as a teen idol, but has evolved into a respected world star. Our reporter Joana Chung visited the show in Ziggo Dome and tells us he had the Ziggo Dome in the palm of his hands all night!
It is hard to believe that Shawn Mendes is only 20 years old. He is on tour to promote his third, self-titled pop record, on which he presented a brand new sound. Some songs seem to have been inspired by the sound of pop stars like Justin Timberlake, while he himself cites John Mayer as a major influence. Other than the usual love songs about longing and romance, he also opened up about his anxiety in songs like ‘In My Blood’. His honesty in his lyrics and his friendly personality have made him into a proper boy-next-door type of pop star. In the days leading up to his concerts in Amsterdam (he played shows in Ziggo Dome on the 7th and 8th of March) he made the news when he took time to take photos with a long line of fans waiting when he exited his hotel. This same laidback personality is what we get to see on stage too. You can almost picture him awkwardly introducing himself to his future parents in law!
The support act of the night is Grammy winner Alessia Cara. The Canadian pop star released her second album The Pains of Growing at the end of last year, and the songs, including lead single ‘Growing Pains’ sound more raw and mature than the work of her debut. She plays the singles like ‘Here’, ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’ and ‘Wild Things’, while finishing her set with ‘Stay’, her collaboration with Zedd which became a big international hit.
Shawn Mendes starts his show at 8:40pm and already plays numerous hits within the first 15 minutes. He starts out with the swinging ‘Lost In Japan’ and from this moment on, until the very end of the show, his mostly young female fans scream at the top of their lungs. Every single song, from ‘There’s Nothing Holding Me Back’ to ‘Stitches’, is sung by almost every single fan in the room. Every visitor of the show receives a white wristband that will light up in different colours to the beat of the music throughout the show. There is a massive rose on the smaller second stage that lights up together with the wristbands around the room.
Although everyone has their own seat tonight, fans all jump up when Mendes finds himself in the middle of the crowd when moving from stage to stage. On the smaller stage, he creates a more intimate vibe, playing the slower songs on guitar. When returning to the main stage, he continues the party with ‘Treat You Better’. The fans in Amsterdam get a premiere too! When he starts the song ‘Particular Taste’, taken from his most recent album, the fans go wild as this is the first time he performs the track live.
Shawn Mendes delivers flawless vocals all through the night and shows himself to be an entertainer who exactly knows how to play his audience. It was impossible to tell that this was the first concert of the tour, as the show is fully streamlined and flows well. He oozes confidence as if he has been doing this for 30 years. He and his team know exactly what his fans want to hear with a great mix of hit singles and new material. Don’t be fooled by his sweet and almost shy appearance, because this boy knows how to put on show. He shows you can be a charismatic pop star while still behaving professionally. Shawn Mendes has star quality in bucket loads and deserves his status as world star.

Concert Recensie: Shawn Mendes The Tour in Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam
Shawn Mendes begint nieuwe wereldtour in Ziggo Dome
Op donderdag 7 maart opende Shawn Mendes zijn nieuwe Shawn Mendes The Tour in de Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. Het is alweer de derde wereldtour die de Canadese popster afwerkt. Het populaire tieneridool heeft zich inmiddels ontpopt tot een ware wereldartiest en speelt de Ziggo Dome met gemak plat. Reporter Joana Chung was erbij en vertelt je alles over wat er zich afspeelde bij de show van Mendes.
Het is maar amper te bevatten dat Shawn Mendes slechts twintig jaar oud is en alweer zijn derde popalbum aan het promoten is. Het repertoire van zijn laatste, naar zichzelf vernoemde album doet hier en daar denken aan de sound van Justin Timberlake en zelf geeft hij aan ook geïnspireerd te zijn door John Mayer. Naast de bekende liefdesliedjes over onmogelijke verlangens en romantische gevoelens, toont Shawn Mendes ook zijn kwetsbaarheid door te zingen over en zijn beklemmende angststoornis. Hij kampt daar al een tijd mee en wilt daar graag open over zijn. Voor de concerten (op 8 maart vindt een tweede show plaats) haalde Mendes al meerdere malen het nieuws door op straat geduldig met een lange rij fans op de foto te gaan. Ook op het podium presenteert hij zich als een vriendelijke boy-next-door met een gulle lach. Je kunt al bijna voor je zien hoe hij zich aarzelend voorstelt bij de kennismaking van zijn schoonouders.
In het voorprogramma van Shawn Mendes staat niemand minder dan Grammy winnares Alessia Cara. De zangeres bracht vorig jaar haar tweede plaat The Pains of Growing uit en liedjes als ‘Growing Pains’ klinken rauwer en volwassener dan het materiaal van haar debuut. Daarvan komen de singles ‘Here’, ‘Scars to Your Beautiful’, en ‘Wild Things’ ook voorbij. Als afsluiter speelt ze ‘Stay’, de samenwerking met DJ Zedd die een grote hit werd.
Shawn Mendes start om 20:40 uur op een rond hoofdpodium en het publiek wordt binnen een kwartier gelijk getrakteerd op een salvo aan hits. Hij vangt aan met ‘Lost In Japan’ en een gillende massa van voornamelijk jonge vrouwen houdt zich niet meer stil tot het einde van het concert. Alle liedjes, van ‘There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back’ tot aan ‘Stitches’, worden luidkeels meegezongen. Vooraf het concert krijgen de bezoekers allemaal een wit polsbandje. Tijdens het eerste nummer blijkt het bandje verschillende kleuren in afwisselende patronen af te geven en knipperen de polsbandjes voortdurend als sterren in de nacht. Op het tweede podium staat een enorme roos met een lange steel die net als de polsbandjes fel oplicht en mee kleurt op de maat van de nummers.
Al zijn er vanavond alleen zitplaatsen, iedereen springt op als Mendes bij het wisselen van podium te midden van het publiek verschijnt. Hier wordt het concert intiemer, wanneer de jonge muzikant zich op gitaar begeleidt en wat rustiger werk ten gehore brengt. Terug op het hoofdpodium knalt hij het publiek weer wakker met ‘Treat You Better’ en wanneer hij ‘Particular Taste’ inzet, wordt dit met gejuich ontvangen. Dit nummer van zijn meest recente plaat was nog niet eerder live gespeeld.
Shawn Mendes is live erg goed bij stem en treedt op vol overgave. Hij blijkt een echte entertainer en met virtuoos gitaarspel en enthousiasme spoort hij het publiek meermaals aan om mee te zingen uit volle borst. Uit niets blijkt dat dit zijn openingsconcert is, omdat de show zeer soepel verloopt. Hij profileert zich als een doorgewinterde muzikant die zelfverzekerd op het podium staat. Zowel zijn hits als zijn laatste album worden prima met elkaar afgewisseld. Het publiek wordt volledig meegenomen door zijn optreden en zijn lieve uitstraling doet hem nuchter en normaal overkomen. Toch is van schuchterheid geen sprake en eenmaal op het podium zet hij een grootse show neer. Iemand als Shawn Mendes laat zien dat charisma en professionaliteit ook hand in hand kunnen gaan. Hij geeft een show vol star quality en verdient het om aan de top te staan!
