The Netherlands sends upcoming singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence
The Netherlands finally found their Eurovision mojo back in 2013. After years and years of not qualifying for the final, Anouk brought them back into top 10, after which The Common Linnets did even better with a 2nd position in 2014. Ever since, the country has not reached the top 10 anymore (they finished in 11th place both in 2016 and 2017), but only missed the final on one occasion (back in 2015). Since 2013, they have sent some of their biggest national stars, but broadcaster AVROTROS focussed their search on the song instead of the artist this year. This resulted in upcoming singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence (read more about his career so far here) being the chosen one with his own composition ‘Arcade’.

Duncan Laurence visited Dutch TV show De Wereld Draait Door to finally present his Eurovision track. He explained how he wrote ‘Arcade’ from the perspective of someone whose lover disappeared, but they never gave up hope that one day he would return. He tells the story in a universal way, so every single person in Europe could somehow relate to it. The message is packed in a modern pop ballad with an explosive chorus. ‘Arcade’ starts out with just piano and Duncan’s emotive vocals, while the instrumentation builds up to a climax. The production elevates the composition with enough drama, but never sounds insincere. ‘Arcade’ comes across as an authentic composition that is not trying to follow any trend, but if we have to compare its sound to artists out there, I would say it somehow resembles bands like Coldplay with a hint of Hozier. Duncan Laurence delivered a composition that is capable of conveying emotions and getting its story across, as well as delivering a memorable hook (the ‘loving you is a losing game’ part is instantly catchy).

Duncan premiered the arty music video already. We see him naked and vulnerable, underwater, while breaking through the surface later on. It is beautiful and understated and the blue tones work perfectly with the vibe of the song. Let us hope he will bring those back on stage in Tel Aviv, be it with pants on this time! It seems that there are quite a few moments with prominent backing vocals in the production, which they hopefully will be able to recreate on stage. If Duncan Laurence can perform this track in a way that it has the same (or even more) emotional impact as the music video, The Netherlands might be one of the countries to beat this year. With a good performance, this will definitely please the juries and I can see Europe’s televoters get behind it as well, as it is contemporary, classy and instantly memorable!

UPDATE: After the song’s premiere, The Netherlands entered the top 3 by bookmakers, who predict the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. International fans have mostly reacted positively to ‘Arcade’. Although of course not every single fan is totally convinced, the words ‘winner material’ and ‘Amsterdam 2020’ are used more than once!

UPDATE 2: Duncan Laurence returned to De Wereld Draait Door to perform a live orchestral version of ‘Arcade’. It was an even more intimate version and it sounds lush! Laurence proves that he vocally masters the song and it sure ain’t no easy song to sing! If he can repeat this on the big stage in May, The Netherlands is a serious contender for the win!

UPDATE 3: After all the songs for Eurovision 2019 were premiered, The Netherlands took over the first spot with bookmakers, now being the country most likely to win the contest. A lot could still change in Tel Aviv in May, but from what we have seen so far, Duncan Laurence deserves every little bit of praise.

Review on semi-final performance:
The Netherlands has been the favourite to win Eurovision this year from the moment Duncan Laurence presented his emotive ballad ‘Arcade’. There is just something special about this song. It is moving, vibrant and hit worthy. The Dutch delegation experienced some technical difficulties during the rehearsals, but the simple and intimate performance looked great on screen now and it sounded even better. We can talk about the light ball and how Duncan started off shaky, but what matters the most is that he sang his heart out and seemed to have moved Europe in the process. This was a goosebump inducing performance of an absolutely stunning composition. Whether he wins or not on Saturday, this is going to be the start of a beautiful career either way.

Review on final performance and result:
Duncan Laurence delivered another emotional performance of his stunning ‘Arcade’. His vocals were gorgeous and the sober staging complemented the track perfectly. He was the hot favourite to win the whole thing and after an exciting result show, he emerged victorious. As the juries and televoters did not agree on a lot this year, a second place with televoters and third place with juries was enough to finally, after 44 years, bring the contest back to the Netherlands! A worthy winner with a potential hit and a very promising start to his career!

Eurovisie 2019 Recensie: Nederland – Duncan Laurence – Arcade

Nederland selecteert singer-songwriter Duncan Laurence met ‘Arcade’
Nederland wist in 2013 eindelijk het tij te keren. Na jaren van mislukkingen op het grote podium van het Eurovisie Songfestival, wist Anouk ons landje eindelijk weer in de finale te krijgen en zelfs een top 10 notering te behalen. Het jaar daarop deden The Common Linnets er nog een schepje bovenop door op de tweede plaats te eindigen. Sindsdien hebben ‘we’ de finale maar één keer gemist (met Trijntje Oosterhuis in 2015) en eindigden we tweemaal op de elfde plaats (met Douwe Bob en O’G3NE). Waylon reisde vorig jaar solo af naar het festival en kwam in de finale niet verder dan de achttiende positie. Dit jaar gooide AVROTROS het roer om en werd er geselecteerd op een liedje en niet op artiest. Dit had als gevolg dat de vrijwel onbekende Duncan Laurence (je leest meer over zijn carrière tot nu toe hier) werd geselecteerd met het lied ‘Arcade’.

Laurence was vanavond te gast in talkshow De Wereld Draait Door om zijn nummer eindelijk te laten horen! Hij legde uit dat hij ‘Arcade’ schreef over een persoon uit zijn jeugd die haar geliefde kwijtraakte, maar nooit de hoop opgaf dat hij ooit terug zou keren. Hij verpakt dit verhaal in een universele tekst over liefde, hoop en verlies, dat iedereen in heel Europa aan zou kunnen spreken. ‘Arcade’ is een moderne popballad met een explosief refrein. Het lied begint met slechts piano en Duncan’s vocalen, terwijl de instrumentatie halverwege opbouwt naar een climax. De productie is dynamisch en eigentijds met een grote spanningsboog, die nooit als gekunsteld aandoet. Laurence en zijn team lijken met het authentiek klinkende ‘Arcade’ geen trend te willen volgen, maar als we het moeten vergelijken met andere artiesten, komen de namen van Coldplay en Hozier naar boven. Duncan Laurence heeft een lied geschreven dat een emotioneel verhaal direct weet over te brengen, maar tegelijkertijd ook een pakkende melodie in ons geheugen achterlaat. Het zinnetje ‘loving you is a losing game’ zingt na een enkele luisterbeurt al door je hoofd!

Duncan zong het lied vanavond nog niet live, maar keert hiervoor morgen terug naar De Wereld Draait Door. Vanavond liet hij ons de muziekvideo zien, waarin hij naakt en kwetsbaar onder water zwemt. Tegen de tijd dat het lied een climax bereikt, breekt hij door het wateroppervlak. Een mooie metafoor! Hopelijk weet hij de blauwe tinten, die perfect bij de vibe van het lied passen, te verwerken in zijn podiumpresentatie in Tel Aviv in mei. Het is wellicht beter als hij dit keer wel zijn broek aanhoudt! Als Duncan Laurence de emotionele kracht van dit lied live op het podium net zo sterk (of zelfs nog sterker) kan overbrengen als in de muziekvideo, dan zou Nederland zomaar eens hoge ogen kunnen gooien op het Eurovisie Songfestival. Met een vocaal sterk optreden, gaat hij de jury zeker in kunnen pakken en ik denk dat ‘Arcade’ modern en pakkend genoeg is op het eerste gehoor om ook de televoters te overtuigen.

UPDATE: Na de première van ‘Arcade’ is Nederland de top 3 bij de bookmakers (die de winnaar van het festival voorspellen) binnen gedrongen. Ook op de internationale fansites wordt overwegend positief gereageerd op het liedje van Duncan Laurence. Hoewel natuurlijk niet iedereen overtuigd is, worden de woorden ‘kwaliteit’, ‘winnaarsmateriaal’ en ‘Amsterdam 2020’ regelmatig herhaald.

UPDATE 2: Duncan Laurence keerde zojuist terug naar De Wereld Draait Door om een live versie van ‘Arcade’met orkest te zingen. Het optreden klinkt nog intiemer dan de studio versie. Vocaal klinkt het krachtig en alle noten worden geraakt, wat indrukwekkend is voor zo’n moeilijk nummer. Als hij dit kan herhalen onder druk in mei in Tel Aviv, doet Nederland mee voor de overwinning.

UPDATE 3: Nadat alle liedjes voor Eurovisie 2019 in première zijn gegaan, is Nederland naar de eerste plaats bij de bookmakers gestegen. Dat wil zeggen dat zij de kans het grootst achten dat Duncan met ‘Arcade’ als winnaar uit de bus zal komen. Er kan nog veel veranderen tijdens de repetities in mei, maar tot nog toe verdient Duncan alle lof die hem toekomt!
