Katy Perry brings back the nineties on new song
The promotional machine around Katy Perry is in full swing at the moment. The singer will release her third major label album, Prism, later this month and teases fans with the release of some new songs. She released the first official single of the album, ‘Roar’, in August and last month she presented us ‘Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)’. Now it is time for the third promotional song to be released, the nineties inspired dance song ‘Walking On Air’.
At this point it is hard to predict in which direction the album will go, as all three songs released so far have very different styles and identities. ‘Roar’ was a bit of an uninspired choice for first single as it is a very safe, generic, radio friendly pop song. Despite this, it is still a pretty good song that did its job extremely well, as it reached the highest regions of the charts all around the world. On promo-single ‘Dark Horse’ Katy shows a completely different side of her artistry. The song has an urban vibe and does not sound like it was written for radio. Still, it has a brilliant hook in the (pre-)chorus. ‘Dark Horse’ gives Perry an edge and the darker lyrics full of attitude suit the singer well.
On ‘Walking On Air’ Katy Perry brings back the sound of the nineties. The song has a dance beat that was typical for this era in music. The song is well produced as it really breathes the style it is going for, but I cannot help but feel, it is not the best attempt at a retro nineties song. These songs usually were built on great, exploding choruses that stick with you for days, and this is exactly where ‘Walking On Air’ falls short. The lyrics in the chorus (“Tonight, I’m walking on air”) are too repetitive and the melody is not exceptionally strong either. Furthermore, Perry’s vocals sound strained at large parts of the song, especially the pre-choruses. I would not want to go as far as to say it is a bad song, but the whole nineties thing (which is a good and not that predictable choice) could have been executed way better.
Perry announced the second official single will be ‘Unconditionally’, a song that is described as a power ballad. I am curious to see what more this era in Perry’s career will bring, but I am sure there will be some great songs on the new album. One thing is certain, Prism is shaping up to be a very diverse album and so far, especially the United States are loving it. By the time of writing this, ‘Walking On Air’ tops the American iTunes chart and both ‘Roar’ and ‘Dark Horse’ still own their place in the top 10. Katy once more establishes the fact she is one of the biggest pop stars on the planet these days.
Prism will be released on the 18th of October.

Katy Perry gaat terug naar de jaren 90 met nieuwe song
De promotiemachine rond Katy Perry draait op volle toeren momenteel. De zangeres zal later deze maand haar derde album bij een groot label, Prism, uitbrengen en tot die tijd geeft ze haar fans voorproefjes door het uitbrengen van losse liedjes. De eerste officiële single van het album, ‘Roar’, verscheen in augustus en vorige maand kwam de promosingle ‘Dark Horse (feat. Juicy J)’ uit. Nu werd het tijd om een derde track van het album de wereld in te slingeren, namelijk het op de jaren 90 geïnspireerde ‘Walking On Air’.
Het is op dit moment moeilijk te voorspellen welke richting het nieuwe album van Katy Perry precies op gaat. Alle drie de uitgebrachte songs hebben namelijk een hele verschillende sound en identiteit. ‘Roar’ was een enigszins flauwe keuze als eerste single, gezien het een heel veilig, middle-of-the-road popdeuntje is. Ondanks dit is het zeker een aardige song die zijn taak goed heeft volbracht, gezien het een wereldwijde hit is geworden. Op promosingle ‘Dark Horse’ laat Katy Perry een compleet andere kant zien. Het lied heeft een urban-achtige sound en klinkt totaal niet alsof het gemaakt is voor op de radio. Toch heeft het wel een hele pakkende melodie, vooral rond het refrein. Liedjes als ‘Dark Horse’ geven Perry een ‘edge’ en de donkere tekst met een beetje attitude passen goed bij de zangeres.
Op ‘Walking On Air’ brengt ze de sound van de jaren 90 terug. De dance beat van de song is dan ook typisch voor deze periode. Het lied is goed geproduceerd gezien het de stijl van deze tijd compleet ademt, maar toch mist het iets om het een echt geslaagde 90ies tribute te maken. De dance hits uit de jaren 90 waren namelijk altijd gebouwd op explosieve, pakkende refreinen en dat is precies waar ‘Walking On Air’ tekort schiet. De lyrics in het refrein (“Tonight, I’m walking on air”) zijn te herhalend en de melodie is ook niet bijzonder sterk. Daarnaast klinkt Perry’s stem vooral tijdens de stukken voor het refrein erg geforceerd. Dit wil nog niet zeggen dat het een slecht lied is, maar het idee had veel beter kunnen worden uitgevoerd.
Perry heeft aangekondigd dat ‘Unconditionally’ de officiële tweede single van het album wordt. Deze song wordt omschreven als een power-ballad. Ik ben zeer benieuwd naar de rest van het album, maar ik twijfel er niet aan dat Katy ons nog gaat verrassen met een aantal uitstekende songs. Het is in ieder geval zeker dat Prism een zeer divers album zal worden en in de Verenigde Staten kunnen ze er alvast geen genoeg van krijgen. Op het moment van schrijven staat ‘Walking On Air’ op nummer 1 in de Amerikaanse iTunes-lijst en ‘Roar’ en ‘Dark Horse’ bezetten nog steeds een plek in de top 10. Hiermee bevestigt Katy nog even dat ze één van de grootste popsterren van het moment is.
