Single Review: Jahméne – Down For Love

Jahmene Down For Love

Jahméne impresses with new single ‘Down For Love’
Everyone who watches or used to watch the UK version of X Factor, might remember contestant Jahmene Douglas. He auditioned in 2012 with a rendition of Etta James’ ‘At Last’ that wowed all four judges. The shy guy quickly became a televoting favorite as well and he finished as the runner-up of the series, just behind James Arthur. After an inescapable album full of covers, which peaked at the top spot of the UK album charts in July 2013, he is now finally ready to present his very own work and the single ‘Down For Love’ is a very promising first taste.

Jahméne decided to lose his last name and made a fresh start with the independent label Moonshot. The first single of his second record is co-written with producer DaVinChe, who also worked with Tinchy Stryder, Wiley and Tinie Tempah. The result is a smooth mix of R&B and pop with some gospel like backing vocals. The production of this ode to love is contemporary R&B in its lightest form and the chorus is simple and straightforward, but with a strong hook. It’s built up from chants and ad lips and of course they come across strong thanks to Jahméne’s versatile and emotional voice. It seems he found a sound that is both contemporary and fits his soulful vocals, which is a good thing. He recorded a black and white video for the song where he delivers the song in between people at a house party. Classy and atmospheric!
