Waylon does what he does best on The World Can Wait
Exciting times for Waylon! The Dutch musician is going to represent the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest for a second time. After finishing as a runner up as part of the band The Common Linnets with the song ‘Calm After The Storm’ back in 2014, he is going solo this year. Last month, Waylon selected the upbeat mix of country, blues and rock ‘Outlaw In ‘Em’ as the song that should bring home the victory. With all the press attention that comes with doing Eurovision, it would be a waste not to have an album ready to promote, right!? Waylon’s timing is on point, dropping his fifth LP The World Can Wait a month before his big moment in Lisbon!
Waylon has been using his participation to the fullest to promote his new music. Introducing a new song each day for five days straight in a Dutch TV show, only to announce which one he chose for Eurovision after, was a brilliant move to get his songs heard by as many curious listeners as possible. And let us just admit it, his songs deserve to be heard! ‘Outlaw In ‘Em’ is not my favourite track to be completely honest, but I do applaud this choice as it is the boldest, loudest song on the record and it does completely stand out among the other Eurovision contenders!
What is left for us now is a 10 track record to enjoy. Waylon mentioned in interviews how this album represents him best as an artist and that is easy to hear. He has never used his passion for country so unapologetically in his own work until now. The album opens with the moving ballad ‘Back Together’, in which Waylon tries to convince the love of his life that their relationship does not have to end. Another endearing moment is the title track, which he wrote after a conversation with his girlfriend who was dealing with a burn out. The song encourages anyone (and her in particular) to slow down for a minute and not pay attention to what the rest of the world thinks or does. Wise words, mister Waylon!
‘Shadows In The Dark’ is pure country gold in terms of instrumentation, the story telling in the lyrics and the way he uses his deep and emotive vocals. ‘Thanks But No Thanks’ is a heartbreaking country ballad on which Waylon sings his heart out. I could picture this being played on American country radio! ‘That’s How She Goes’ and ‘Highway of Heartache’ bring a poppier sound with an upbeat vibe and the most radiofriendly choruses to be found here. ‘She Just Wants To Play’ is the type of track that would burn the place down on stage, although it already rocks properly on record too. The World Can Wait is a country record with enough poppy elements to keep the more casual fans interested, while still presenting a cohesive body of work. His passion shines through in these well crafted songs and the raw, but effective production. Waylon seems to be doing exactly what he feels is right on this album and that attitude could actually bring him far in Eurovision too!
Album Recensie: Waylon – The World Can Wait
Waylon blinkt uit met country zonder compromissen
Het zijn spannende tijden voor Waylon. Over een maand doet de Nederlandse zanger voor een tweede maal mee aan het Eurovisie Songfestival. Na een tweede plaats als onderdeel van The Common Linnets met het lied ‘Calm After The Storm’ in 2014, kan hij er geen genoeg van krijgen. Dit jaar vertegenwoordigt hij ons land met ‘Outlaw In ‘Em’, dat hij vorige maand officieel presenteerde. Bij een deelname aan het songfestival komt veel media-aandacht kijken en het is natuurlijk zonde als je dan niet ook toevallig een plaat uit hebt om te promoten. Met de timing van Waylon is in ieder geval niks mis; een kleine maand voor zijn optreden in Lissabon lanceert hij zijn vijfde album The World Can Wait.
Waylon heeft het songfesival goed kunnen gebruiken om zijn nieuwe plaat al voor de release aan de man te brengen. In De Wereld Draait Door speelde hij vijf dagen lang elke keer één nieuw liedje, om pas aan het einde bekend te maken welke hij in Portugal zou gaan zingen. Maar laten we wel wezen, deze liedjes verdienen het om gehoord te worden. ‘Outlaw In ‘Em’ is dan ook niet mijn persoonlijke favoriet, hoewel ik respect heb voor de keuze voor het meest luide en gedurfde nummer. Hij gaat in ieder geval opvallen tussen zijn concurrenten uit Europa!
Wat ons rest is een ijzersterk album met tien nieuwe tracks! In interviews legde Waylon uit dat dit het album is dat het dichtstbij hem staat en dat is niet moeilijk om te horen! Het album opent met de ballade ‘Back Together’, waarin Waylon een geliefde probeert te overtuigen dat het einde van hun relatie echt nog niet nabij hoeft te zijn. De titeltrack vormt een ontroerend moment dat de zanger aan zijn huidige vriendin, die thuis zat met een burn out, opdroeg. Hij vraagt haar en ons allemaal, om het eens wat rustiger aan te doen en ons niet teveel te laten leiden door de snel bewegende wereld om ons heen. Wijze woorden!
Op ‘Shadows In The Dark’ levert hij pure country met een passende instrumentatie, de typische manier van een verhaal vertellen in de lyrics en natuurlijk die snik in zijn stem. Vocaal trekt hij pas echt alle registers open op ‘Thanks But No Thanks’, een levendige ballade die niet zou misstaan op de Amerikaanse radio. ‘That’s How She Goes’ en ‘Highway of Heartache’ brengen het meest poppy geluid met pakkende refreinen die het dan weer goed zouden kunnen doen in Nederland. Met ‘She Just Wants To Play’ wordt er op plaat al flink gerockt, al is dit het soort lied dat vooral live goed tot zijn recht komt. The World Can Wait is een countryplaat met genoeg pop-elementen om het grote publiek te bespelen, zonder dat het iets afdoet aan het samenhangende geheel. Zijn passie voor deze stijl is duidelijk hoorbaar in de sterk geschreven liedjes en de rauwe, effectieve manier van produceren. Waylon doet op deze plaat precies waar hij zich goed bij voelt en die houding zal hem geen windeieren leggen op het grote Songfestival podium!
