Lucy Rose introduces second album with show in Rotown
In the past few years the British female singer-songwriter market has been blossoming and Lucy Rose was one of the most promising new faces when she released her debut album Like I Used To back in 2012. She impressed with a collection of touching and mostly acoustic songs, but earlier this year she released her sophomore record called Work It Out, which has a more positive, light and at times swinging vibe. This made for a mostly upbeat performance in Rotown in Rotterdam.
Rose is currently promoting her second album by touring Europe and she visits the Netherlands for two intimate performances (she plays a show in Paradiso as well). For both shows, German band JOCO joined as a support act. The two sisters, who proudly explained the audience how they recorded their album in the Abbey Road Studios with help of a producer who also worked with Paul McCartney, delivered an entertaining show with beautiful harmonies, catchy pop tunes like ‘Pilot’ and ‘We Draw A Line’, a lovely song in German and Dutch chats in between (they studied in the Netherlands for a while). Their indie pop with both acoustic and electronic elements perfectly suited the vibe of the evening.
Next up was the lady of the evening. Rose performs in a simple t-shirt and jeans, together with her band consisting of two guitarists, a keyboardist and drummer. They open with the poppy and catchy single ‘Like An Arrow’, which immediately shows the progression in sound she made recently. The light and danceable ‘Our Eyes’ and ‘In The End’ which Lucy performs with a lot of enthusiasm are great examples of this as well. She shows she can rock with her band as well, during tracks like ‘Cover Up’. She plays the guitars and also accompanies herself on piano. However all the uptempo tracks sound strong live, Lucy still impresses most when she takes it down a bit and performs her slower and more emotional songs.
Her performances of ‘Nebraska’ and ‘For You’ are gorgeous and definitely belong to the highlights of the show and her new album. The audience still reacts very enthusiastic to ‘Shiver’ from the first album. After ‘She’ll Move’ Lucy wipes away a tear and explains to the audience how much it means that she is able to touch people’s lives with her songs and that people actually came down to see her show in Rotterdam. It’s endearing to see how surprised she still is that people actually come down to see her play. When you hear her perfrom the closing track ‘Into The Wild’ all by herself, you realize how lucky you are you are witnessing this angelic voice in such an intimate venue. Concert recensie: Lucy Rose in Rotown
Lucy Rose stelt nieuwe plaat voor in Rotterdam
Het Britse aanbod van vrouwelijke singer-songwriters is in de afgelopen jaren exponentieel gegroeid en Lucy Rose was één van de meest veelbelovende talenten toen ze in 2012 haar debuutalbum Like I Used To lanceerde. Ze imponeerde met gevoelige, vaak akoestische liedjes en dit jaar keerde ze terug met haar tweede plaat, Work It Out, waarop ze het akoestische combineerde met elektronische geluiden en catchy poprefreinen. Het lichtere en meer swingende karakter van deze plaat vertaalt zich naar een afwisselende en vlotte show in Rotown in Rotterdam.
Lucy toert momenteel door Europa om haar nieuwe plaat aan de man te brengen en daarom speelt ze twee intieme shows in Nederland (ze staat ook nog in de kleine zaal van Paradiso). Voor beide optredens reist de Duitse band JOCO met haar mee als voorprogramma. De twee zussen brengen een aangename indie pop sound met mooie harmonieën en vertellen trots hoe ze hun plaat Horizon in de Abbey Road Studios hebben opgenomen met een producer die ook met Paul McCartney werkte. Ze hebben een aantal sterke popliedjes zoals ‘Pilot’ en ‘We Draw A Line’ opgenomen en ook een Duitstalig liedje komt live goed uit de verf. Het publiek eet uit hun hand als ze tussen de liedjes door Nederlands spreken, omdat ze hier een tijdje hebben gestudeerd. De mix van akoestische en elektronische elementen die ze brengen, past perfect bij de sfeer van de avond.
Daarna is het tijd voor de ster van de avond. Lucy Rose komt op in een simpel t-shirt met spijkerbroek met een band van drie man en één vrouw sterk, die de gitaren, drums en keyboard voor hun rekening nemen. Ze openen met de single ‘Like An Arrow’, een lichtvoetig en poppy begin van de avond. Hierop is gelijk te horen dat ze een progressie in sound heeft ondergaan. Dit blijkt ook uit de swingende versies van ‘Our Eyes’ en ‘Till The End’ die ze vol enthousiasme brengt. Ze laat zien dat ze samen met haar band ook behoorlijk kan rocken tijdens ‘Cover Up’. Ze begeleidt zichzelf voortdurend op gitaar of toetsen. Hoewel de uptempo platen goed uit de verf komen live, maakt Rose nog altijd de meeste indruk met de wat rustigere, emotionele songs.
Haar live versies van ‘Nebraska’ en ‘For You’ zijn adembenemend mooi en behoren tot de hoogtepunten van de avond en haar album. Het publiek reageert nog altijd erg enthousiast wanneer ze ‘Shiver’ van haar vorige plaat speelt. Na ‘She’ll Move’ pinkt Lucy een traantje weg en vertelt ze hoe bijzonder het voor haar is om mensen te raken met haar muziek en dat er in een stad als Rotterdam mensen geld betalen om haar te komen zien. Als je haar hoort afsluiten met het akoestische ‘Into The Wild’ besef je hoe bijzonder het is om dit talent met engelachtige stem in zo’n intieme venue aan het werk te zien. Dus in dit geval, jij bedankt Lucy!
