Miguel sexes up Paradiso with Wild Heart tour
Not every artist that is huge in the United States in terms of airplay and album sales, earn the same levels of success in Europe. R&B singer Miguel never really had a hit in the Netherlands at least, but managed to sell out Paradiso in Amsterdam with ease. The singer-songwriter is currently promoting the release of his third album WildHeart with a tour and visited the pop temple. Although Miguel not yet reached full international pop star status, he is an icon in Paradiso. He knows exactly how to play his fans with a combination of sultry vocals, sensual tunes and a lot of sex!
The moment Miguel Pimentel steps on stage with his five band members, an explosion of sound starts in the audience and this never really dies down during his concert. The young girls all over the venue are in awe of him and of course Miguel knows very well how to encourage their admiration. He is shirtless most of the time, showing off his well trained body with sensual dances. He purposely shows a lot of skin and every time he flirts with one of his fans or moves his hips, the teenage girls can hardly contain themselves. If this was all the show was about, we could have gone to a strip club as well, but luckily, Miguel has a lot more to offer, musically as well.
From the above description one might think Miguel positions himself as the new Jason Derülo or Usher, but musically his style is closer to the sound of Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, contemporary and progressive R&B. His latest album Wildheart however, is unique and experimental and therefore hard to compare to any other artist. This shows in his live performance as well, which is at times fragmentary, for example when he separates the first verse of captivating album opener ‘a beautiful exit’ from the second, which he performs later on. The variety between the funk of ‘waves’ and the guitars of ‘face the sun’ is great, but it all fits and Miguel brings every track with bucket loads of passion. He is a charismatic show man with quirky feathered outfits, sometimes bird like dance moves, bold gestures and never dying energy.
Of course the fans were treated with a few moments of rest and reflection, for example during a touching rendition of his ‘Leaves’, a beautiful love ballad on which he shows off his strong and versatile voice. He introduces ‘What’s Normal Anyway’ with a monologue about the difficulties growing up as a both Mexican-American and African-American child. He explained how he could never find a box to tick when it comes to his race, but he learned not to want to conform to normality anymore and encourages his fans to do the same. Such a message could come across as cheesy, but Miguel’s honest story makes it actually believable and empowering.
Towards the end Miguel makes his fans go crazy once more by jumping into the audience for several times, which his bodyguards visibly don’t appreciate. His fans however roll over each other to touch their idol. He closes the night with ‘Adorn’ and ‘How Many Drinks’, both perfect contemporary R&B songs, although the latter is performed in a more agressive, less groovy way than the delicious original. The fans don’t mind and were in awe of this big entertainer for the whole 100 minutes the concert lasted. Judging by this quality performance, the next time Miguel will be in the Netherlands, Paradiso might become to small for this still rising star.

Miguel brengt sexy R&B show in Paradiso
Niet alles wat in Amerika op muzikaal gebied een groot succes wordt, waait ook over naar Nederland. Daar is R&B ster Miguel een goed bewijs van. Hoewel hij in Nederland nog nooit echt de hitlijsten heeft bestormd, wist hij wel met gemak de grote zaal van Paradiso uit te verkopen. Hij toert momenteel de wereld rond in het kader van de Wildheart tour, ter promotie van het gelijknamige album. Hoewel hij nog niet bekend staat als een echte wereldster, behaalde hij in Paradiso wel haast een legendarische status. Hij weet als geen ander hoe hij zijn gewillige fans moet bespelen en doet dit overtuigend met een combinatie van zwoele vocalen, sensuele dansmoves en vooral veel seks.
Op het moment dat Miguel Pimentel samen met zijn vijf man sterke band het podium betreedt, gaat er een oorverdovend gegil door de zaal, dat eigenlijk nooit echt meer ophoudt. Het publiek, dat veelal uit tienermeiden bestaat, ligt aan de voeten van de zanger en hij weet daar handig op in te spelen. Hij staat grotendeels shirtless op te treden en laat zijn afgetrainde lijf zien met sexy danspassen. Hij laat graag veel van zijn lichaam zien elke keer dat hij met een meisje flirt of wat heupbewegingen inzet, kunnen de meiden zich maar moeilijk beheersen. Als de show hier alleen maar om draaide, hadden we natuurlijk net zo goed naar een stripclub kunnen gaan, maar gelukkig heeft Miguel ook muzikaal heel wat te bieden.
Door bovenstaande beschrijving zou je misschien verwachten dat we hier te maken hebben met de nieuwe Usher of Jason Derülo, maar muzikaal ligt Miguel dichterbij de stijl van Frank Ocean en The Weeknd. Zijn meest recente plaat Wildheart is echter uniek en experimenteel en daarom moeilijk met andere artiesten te vergelijken. Dat blijkt ook in zijn live show waarin hij opvallende keuzes maakt, door bijvoorbeeld de coupletten van het krachtige ‘a beautiful exit’ te verspreiden en op verschillende momenten in te zetten. De variatie tussen de funk van ‘waves’ en de gitaren van ‘face the sun’ is groot, maar toch past het allemaal bij elkaar en weet Miguel letterlijk elk lied met een enorme passie te brengen. Hij toont zich een charismatische showman met opvallende outfits met veren, danspassen die soms aan vogels doen denken en vooral onuitputbaar veel energie.
Gelukkig was er ook wat tijd voor rust en bezinning, bijvoorbeeld met de vertolking van ‘Leaves’, een prachtige liefdesballade waarop de kracht van Miguel’s stemgeluid nog maar eens blijkt. Hij leidt het lied ‘What’s Normal Anyway’ in met een monoloog over het opgroeien met een zowel Mexicaans-Amerikaanse en Afrikaans-Amerikaanse afkomst. Zo vertelt hij hoe hij nooit wist welk bolletje hij moest inkleuren wat betreft zijn afkomst. Tegenwoordig heeft hij besloten zich niet meer druk te maken over het aanpassen aan wat normaal is en vraagt hetzelfde van zijn fans. Zo’n verhaal kan al snel te gemaakt overkomen, maar Miguel weet het met een persoonlijke inslag zeker geloofwaardig te maken.
Tegen het einde maakt Miguel zijn fans (en zijn bodyguards die duidelijk niet van deze acties gecharmeerd zijn) nog eenmaal gek door zich een paar keer achter elkaar achterover in het publiek te laten vallen. De meiden rollen haast over elkaar heen om hun idool te kunnen aanraken. Hij sluit de avond af met zijn grootste hits tot nu toe, ‘Adorn’ en ‘How Many Drinks’, beide prachtige voorbeelden van eigentijdse R&B, hoewel de laatst genoemde in een wat agressievere, minder groovy versie wordt vertolkt dan het origineel. De fans vinden dit echter helemaal niet erg en eten 100 minuten lang uit de hand van de rasechte entertainer. Gezien de kwaliteit van zijn show, zou het mij niet verbazen als Paradiso te klein is, de volgende keer dat deze nog altijd rijzende ster naar Nederland komt.
