Adele moves big crowds with just her voice
Everyone in the Netherlands is currently talking about Adele and her 25 tour. The pop star visits the country for four concerts in Ziggo Dome, the biggest concert venue in Amsterdam. Of course the shows were sold out within minutes. Adele returned with a bang last year when she released the single ‘Hello’ and the accompanying album 25. To promote the release, she started touring in Europe and North America. This time around she does not play in intimate venues, like the tour for 21, but she sells out arenas. Adele still manages to create an intimate atmosphere and moves her audience with just her voice and songs.

What better way to open the show than with her monster hit ‘Hello’? “Hello, it’s me. I’ve been wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet”, she opens the show in a sober staging with her eye in the background. And of course all her fans want to ‘meet’ her again! The whole show is a balanced mixture of songs of her latest record and the biggest hits from her past. She convinces vocally on 19‘s ‘Chasing Pavements’, ‘Hometown Glory’ and ‘Make You Feel My Love’, where everyone puts a lighter (or a phone light) in the air. It is clear that most of her fans have been there from the beginning or did their homework in checking her back catalogue, as they are singing along with every single song.

From the new tracks, it is definitely ‘Million Years Ago’ that makes a big impression. Adele sentimentally looks back on her life before she got famous which of course makes for an emotional moment and the crowd is singing along with melancholia. ‘Sweetest Devotion’, one of the two songs Adele kept from a writing and recording session she had in a period things weren’t going all too well, turns out to be a fan favourite too. Of course ‘When We Were Young’, the track that brought her back on the right track when working on 25, is sung from the top of everyones lungs in the Ziggo Dome and an acoustic version of recent single ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’ goes down well too.

The absolute highlights when it comes to audience reactions follow when she plays the hits of her iconic second album 21. ‘Rumour Has It’ is one of the first tracks to be performed and Adele warns her fans they better enjoy the moment, as it is the only song of the night they can really dance to. Everybody jumps up and does as they were told. ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ is performed on the small stage in the middle of the crowd, surrounded by rain. ‘Someone Like You’ is a big goosebumps inducing moment like always, when everyone sings along to the emotional and oh so recognizable lyrics. She closes the show with a spectacular live version of ‘Rolling In The Deep’, with perfect use of the backing vocals who carry the ‘you’re gonna wish you never had me’ hook stunningly.

When Adele is not singing emotional songs, she likes to talk, a lot. She is constantly making everyone in the building laugh with her stories in between the songs. Whether it is her rather ambiguous love for the Dutch waffles (‘Stroopwafels’), a chat about sneakers with two guys she invited on stage or her awkward way of taking selfies with fans from the stage, Adele is hilarious. All jokes aside though, she tells her audience emotionally that it means the world to her that they waited for a long time for her to come back and still are so loyal. After tonight it is not hard to see why. Adele is in her own league, as a songwriter, as a vocalist, as a performer and as an endearing stage persona.

Concert Recensie: Adele in Ziggo Dome

Een lach en een traan bij Adele in Ziggo Dome
Nederland is deze week volledig in de ban van Adele. De Britse superster bezoekt Amsterdam voor maar liefst vier concerten in de Ziggo Dome, die uiteraard binnen korte tijd volledig waren uitverkocht. De zangeres kwam eind vorig jaar terug met het grote succes van single ‘Hello’ en het bijbehorende album 25. Om de plaat verder te promoten reist ze nu door Europa en later Noord-Amerika voor concerten. Deze vinden niet net als tijdens de tour rond 21 in intieme zaaltjes plaats zoals Paradiso, maar deze keer is gekozen voor de grootst beschikbare arena’s. Adele weet het echter nog steeds als een intieme show te laten voelen door haar publiek te ontroeren met enkel haar stem en liedjes.

Hoe kun je beter de show openen dan met monster hit ‘Hello’? “Hello, it’s me. I’ve been wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet”, opent ze de show en natuurlijk willen haar fans die jaren hebben gewacht niets liever. De show is een gebalanceerde mix tussen nieuwe nummers en hits uit het verleden. Ze overtuigt vocaal op de songs van 19, zoals ‘Chasing Pavements’, het altijd prachtige ‘Hometown Glory’ en Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’ waarbij alle aanstekers en telefoons de lucht in gaan. Het is duidelijk dat al haar fans er al vanaf het begin bij waren of hun huiswerk hebben gedaan door ook het eerste album te checken, want alles wordt uit volle borst meegezongen.

Van de nieuwe liedjes maakt ‘Million Years Ago’ indruk. Adele kijkt vol weemoed terug op de onbezorgde jaren voordat ze beroemd was, wat zorgt voor een emotioneel moment bij zowel de zangeres als publiek. ‘Sweetest Devotion’, één van de twee liedjes die Adele bewaarde van sessies in een periode dat het allemaal wat minder met haar ging, komt live ook uitstekend uit de verf. Het publiek is blij dat de track het album heeft gehaald, want er wordt wederom uit volle borst meegezongen. ‘When We Were Young’ betekende een ommekeer voor Adele in het creatieproces en ook dit nummer is een publieksfavoriet. Ook een akoestische versie van de poppy nieuwe single ‘Send My Love (To Your New Lover)’ wordt met open armen ontvangen in de overvolle Ziggo Dome.

De grootste hoogtepunten voor de fans komen echter wanneer Adele de hits van haar iconische tweede album 21 inzet. ‘Rumour Has It’ is één van de eerste liedjes van de avond en het publiek wordt gelijk gewaarschuwd dat ze maar beter op kunnen staan, want dit is het enige dansbare liedje van de avond. Aan dit verzoek wordt massaal gehoor gegeven. ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ zingt ze op het kleine podium in het midden van de zaal, omringd door regen. ‘Someone Like You’ zorgt zoals altijd voor een kippenvel moment wanneer duizenden stemmen tegelijk het ontroerende refrein ten gehore brengen. Er wordt afgesloten met een spectaculaire versie van ‘Rolling In The Deep’, waar de backing vocals het ‘you’re gonna wish you never had met me’ gedeelte perfect dragen.

Als Adele niet haar emotionele liedjes aan het zingen is, houdt ze van praten. Veel praten. Ze maakt constant iedereen in de zaal aan het lachen met haar geklets tussen de liedjes door. Of het nu gaat om haar dubbelzinnige liefde voor stroopwafels, haar gesprek over sneakers met twee fans die ze het podium op vraagt of de manier waarop ze selfies maakt met het publiek op de eerste rij, Adele is hilarisch. Toch neemt ze ook nog even de tijd om de bezoekers van de show uit de grond van haar hart te bedanken voor hun loyaliteit, zelfs tijdens het lange wachten op nieuw materiaal. Na de show vanavond is het niet moeilijk om te zien waarom haar fans geduld met haar hebben. Ze is niet te evenaren als songwriter, vocaliste en persoonlijkheid op het podium.
