Single Review: Kesha – Praying

Kesha stronger than ever before on ‘Praying’

The past five years sure haven’t been easy for Kesha. The American pop star suffered from a depression while having to fight a legal battle with producer Dr. Luke and his record label. Last year there was finally some good news for her as she dropped collaboration ‘Colors’ with Zedd and now it is time for her proper solo comeback. Today Kesha launched lead single ‘Praying’, taken from her upcoming third album Rainbow to be released in August.

Kesha teased the release on her social media using the term ‘The Beginning’ and a new beginning it is for sure! ‘Praying’, which Kesha co-wrote with Ryan Lewis, sounds nothing like the auto-tuned dance pop most of us remember her for. This is a powerful ballad that starts out with just piano and slowly builds to quite the epic and super catchy climax in which Kesha shows us vocal strengths she did not share before.

Lyrically this track is all about her trying to let go of the ghosts of her past. You can still hear the anger and frustration in her voice, but she turns it into power to move on when she sings: “I hope you’re somewhere praying, I hope your soul is changing. I hope you find your peace, falling on your knees, praying.” Moving stuff to be honest!

Kesha launched the video for the single as well and it starts with a painfully honest monologue about her losing the will to live. We see her run for and fight her demons, getting signs from God and then finding herself in all glory and color again. Welcome back Kesha, we have missed you and this comeback is stronger than we dared to hope for!
